Opinion of Thur the Bible Radio program...

Hiya Everyone!

I just ran acorss a website, http://www.thruthebible.org ,that features a Radio Bible study done in the 50's? 60's? by a gentleman named, John Vernon McGee

They have all his radio shows, in order and it's called Thur the Bible. It is suppose to take you through the Entire Bible in 5 years. now the radio show is/was only 30 minutes, so I suppose one could listen to more than 30 minutes each day and get through the Bible is shorter time.

My question is this. Have anyone ever heard of this? Have you heard of this man?

At face value it seems like a nice program to listen to on my MP3 player at work, but I wanted to see if anyone knew about this program.

J. Vernon McGee was a very godly man. Sold out to God in the ministry.

I have the Thru The Bible broadcast on my PC and listen to it. I have listened to J. Vernon McGee for many years now.

Brother does not read the whole Bible in this course, but rather teaches on key verses in each chapter or passage.

All in all, a thumbs up, but do not let it replace your regular Bible reading.

I have spent countless hours listening the wonderful radio broadcast "Through the Bible". I have learned much much much through McGees ministry.

J. Vernon McGee was a humble and godly man and gifted bible teacher. He has recieved his reward now, but we are still blessed by his radio broadcasts.

I cried when I heard he had passed on back several years ago. Thats how fond I became of him and his broadcast.

Here's a little something about what kind of man and brother he was.

I heard him say on a broadcast one time, or maybe it was on a tape series of his, that people would sometimes ask him if he would like to go on television. He said no, he had no interest in TV, and here was his reason.

He said that he felt that some radio teachers become different when they go on TV. With all the make up and stuff, they sort of change a little bit. I think he said they sometimes seem a little "High Falutin". Not deliberately, but it just happens. People recognise them in the streets and restaurants, etc.

He said something like...

"With me being on the radio, I can walk down the street and nobody knows me from Adam. I'm just a funny sounding voice coming through a little speaker. When I'm out in public I'm a nobody, and thats just the way I like it. All I want to do is lift up HIM!...never me."

If you want my opinion, I think there are some TV evangelists who need to go back to radio!

God bless J. Vernon McGee. He's going to get a big bear hug from me when I meet him!

I met J. Vernon McGee many years ago shortly after I became a christian while working at Hume Lake Christian Camps. I did not know him. When he walked up to the construction site I was working at I talked him for a few minutes and then asked him what kind of work he did. He asked me where I lived and asked if I had heard him on a particular radio station. I had not. I found him to be a very humble man.

Also, I see now that most of the time his name is just mentioned with a J. but his name really was John. I got his name from the http://www.thruthebible.org website, and after you mentioned it, I did see they use J. a lot of the times, but used John when they were talking about him personally.

Great Bible teacher!!! I love listening to him. My mother-in-law also knew him personally as he was one of her Bible College professors. Everything she has told us echoes the sentiments here.

I think this is a very good assessment of the man. I didn't agree with him on several points, but he is still my favorite all time preacher to listen to on the radio. I think he was the first person I ever heard say, "I understand why God hated Esau; I just can't understand why He loved Jacob." (or something like that)

Some people think he sounds funny or quaint or something. It'll grow on ya!

BTW, there is a print series of commentaries based on the Thru the Bible radio. They are good, but listening to him is better.

"May I Say" to ya' that I liked Docta' McGee, when I have or had the chances to take a short ride on the 'Bible Bus' over the years, and actually got to hear him twice between 1969-1976. I do not remember the exact dates by any stretch, nor do I remember the message, except to say I am basically in line with the other posts, here. FTR, the Doctor was an earned Th.D., which required three years after a four year Th.M., both from Dallas Seminary.
Rlv made the ovservation that: "Some people think he sounds funny or quaint or something." Yes, he does. Along with the late Drs. Oliver B.Greene, M. R. DeHaan, Donald Grey Barnhouse, Torrey M. Johnson- Founder of YFC, and Evangelist Lester Roloff. Compared to some of them, he actually was 'dulcet toned'. I'd offer that, overall, this is a 'fair to middlin'' handful of good preachers and Bible teachers. And since "... it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe." (I Cor. 1:12b- NKJV), I'd suggest that maybe what is preached is more important than what the the sound and tone of the preacher. I know I'd sure like to attend a weekend Bible conference that featured these six. How about you?

And you can still hear Oliver B.Greene and Lester Ro;off on the radio via tape, as well. I don't know about Drs. DeHaan, Barnhouse, and Johnson.

We used to call Dr. DeHann "Gravel Grady". He had such an unusual voice, but I agree, he gave wonderful messages.

Dr. J.Vernon McGee was certainly a most personable preacher. It was hard to turn his program off. I have a few of his books and always admired his approach.

The other radio program of note was Back to the Bible. Always a good listen.

I still listen to "McGee, Roloff, Greene", on the radio, but then "Christian Radio" is all that plays on my radio, Country gone "rock", and rock gone "crazy".

I'd recommend "either" man to "All".

J. Vernon Mc'Gee is a child of God, I have no doubts about that. He loves the Lord, evidenced by what comes out of his mouth.
There are probably many aspects of his theology and soteriology that we Primitive Baptists will not agree but all these 'logys' will remain here with the dust when we leave these earthly bodies anyway, and are of value only in this fallen world.
I love this man.
I believe he has gone on to be with the Lord.

But there are also some (rarely) good contemporary country songs out there, every once in a while..

pinoybaptist: You are correct. Dr. McGee, as well as the others I named, except one, have been with the Lord for at least years, now. The possible exception is Torrey M. Johnson.
