Ineed it is true. And the heart does not still have to be beating when the organs are harvested (though Marcia's posts are correct; it is better if it is). I see no problem taking organs from a patient who is brain dead or an anencephalic infant.

Organs are not taken from people in a coma, can breathe on their own, etc.

Any potential organ donor can rest assured that if a transplant team is coming for you, you were a done deal before they were even called.

Premature Organ Harvesting

William Rardin decided to self-terminate in September of last year (2004). His chosen method was a shotgun. He mortally wounded himself and was taken to a hospital. He was a registered organ donor and his organs were transplanted into several individuals. The coronor ruled, however, that the cause of William's death was organ removal rather than the shotgun blast. He claimed that sufficient tests to deem William dead had not been conducted. Accordingly, he ruled the death a homicide. After considerable controversy, the coronor reversed his initial determination and concluded that the cause of death was actually the self-inflicted gunshot wound.

This case shows how difficult it is to determine when organ harvesting should occur. If done too soon, there is a risk that the donor is not really dead. If not done soon enough, there is the risk of organ deterioration to the point that they would no longer be suitable for transplant. It is a tough call to make an accurate conclusion that, "He's dead, Jim."

Of course this happens, and it will continue until there is some quantum leap (again) within medical science.

If you're a hospital patient, this should be the least of your worries. You are much more likely to be killed by a medication error, misdiagnosis or hospital-acquired infection.

It's kinda like the Jehovah False Witness lady who was struck by a car driven by a drunk several years ago. She had suffered internal injuries, but was conscious & adamantly refused a blood transfusion. She soon lost enough blood internally so that she died before surgeons could stop the bleeding.

At the driver's trial, several treating physicians testified that she would almost certainly have lived & resumed a normal life had she been given enough blood to have sustained her life until the bleeding could've been stopped. Of course they couldn't GUARANTEE she woulda lived...ONLY GOD can do THAT! But her chances for survival woulda been vastly enhanced had she allowed the full range of available treatments to have been used.

A jury subsequently ruled that the driver was INNOCENT of vehicular homicide because the prosecution could NOT prove the vic's death was 100% certain because of the collision, AND that the vic, by refusing proper known-beneficial standard medical treatment, had contributed substantially to her own death.

I see nothing sinful about organ transplanting myself, but I would recommend that every Baptist **PRAY** about the matter. (I don't hesitate to give blood! Certainly nothing wrong with possibly SAVING ANOTHER'S LIFE!)
