Origin of the TERM King James Only

"the adoption by the city council of Crestview, Fla., of an ordinance prohibiting the burning of the Revised Standard Version...which prescribed a $500 fine or 90 days in jail"

Baptist preacher there ended up dissolving RSV in lye instead.

December 1952:

"A crowd of about 2,000 persons looks on as Rev. M. D. Garrett (waving hat), drops a copy of the new standard revised edition of the Bible into a bubbling tub of lye in downtown Crestview, Northwest Florida town, Stooping over to place a bucket over the tub is Garrett's wife. Garrett, who says he is a Baptist minister, said the new translation 'is the working of Satan and Communists". Apparently no official action will be taken against Garrett, despite a city ordinance forbidding the destruction of any copy of the Bible within the city limits"

I don't want to go too far down this road, since it can lead us way off the topic, but here are a couple of examples.

In the Pentecostal realm, two names have cropped up a lot in my searches, Craig Savige and Matthew Verschuur, associated with the Victory Faith Centre in Victoria, Australia.

Awhile back I read a blog by an Orthodox priest who complained that some folks insisted on using only King James Orthodox services (i.e., services in the English language). He spoke of those who insisted on it as a minority, "but they are a strong enough force to prevent the updating of the Orthodox Divine Liturgy into modern English in at least one jurisdiction."

Verschuur is a quack, a self-appointed "bishop", & calls himself "Bibleprotector". I have dialogued with him, & he cannot defend the fact that the KJVO myth has no Scriptural support, not defend the goofs & booboos in the KJV that were pointed out to him by myself & others. I believe Logos has dialogued with him as well as I.

But I will say I've never seen him post the term "KJV only" anywhere.

And it appears he and Savige are quax together.

The only reason I mentioned him was because Yeshua1 was asking about non-Baptists. However, Verschuur does seem to use the term King James Bible Only, as he does HERE and HERE.
Glad you posted those linx! I hadn't read too much of his garbage except what he's posted on various discussion sites.

Any good?
No. That quack useta argue that the Cambridge Edition was the only true KJV & the other editions had been altered by printers, "editors", etc. He claimed he was "Bibleprotector"(the handle he used) because he sought to protect people from other Bible versions besides the CE of the KJV.

However, he was at a loss to respond to me when I reminded him that the CE had all the same goofs found in other KJV editions, such as "Easter" in Acts 12:4. (I have a CE myself, so I know.)

Wanna find out more about him & his garbage? Just google "bibleprotector".

I'm not gonna post any more about that phony "bishop" in this thread lest I derail it.

I have read from non KJVO sites that many see the Cambridge 1873 edition as being ther "best" Kjv edition!

In my experience, the English seem to prefer the name "Authorised Version," while Americans seem to prefer the name "King James."
When the NKJV was published in the UK in 1982, it was titled the Revised Authorised Version :

The Concordia Theological Seminary Library has a one sheet writing titled The King James Only?. It was written by Homer Austin Kent, Jr (1926-2020) of the Grace Theological Seminary. It was written sometime in the 1970s. Unfortunately, without reading it, I can't know how it uses the term (other than knowing that Kent would not have supported King James as the only inspired Bible, since he was one of the translators of the original NIV for the book of Hebrews).
Homer Kent Jr. wrote: "There have recently appeared tracts, pamphlets, and even a few books vigorously defending the King James Version and practically anathematizing all others as liberal plots to undermine the Word of God" (p. 3)
I was able to obtain a copy of this tract. "King James Only" is only used in the title. From what Logos quotes from the Spire from 1983, which is also in the tract, it would suggest someone else might have used the term in the tracts, pamphlets, or books which drew out his response. There is nothing in the tract that suggests when it was written, other than naming Kent as the President of the Grace Theological Seminary -- which was from 1976-1986.

Glenn Conjurske noted that he used the term King James only "simply as the commonly understood designation of a well defined theological position, the same as such terms as Calvinist, Baptist, and Fundamentalist" (Bible Version Controversy, p. 129).

Glenn Conjurske asserted: "We all know very well what 'King James Only' means. It refers to those who hold the King James Version to be without error" (p. 129).

Glenn Conjurske noted: "The fact is, D. A. Waite believes in the perfection of the King James translation. He believes the translation to be without error. This is the distinguishing tenet of the King James Only movement. It is this belief which has created the movement" (pp. 129-130).

Glenn Conjurske wrote: "But the King James Only men seem to be ashamed of their name, and therefore complain of its use, and quibble about its meaning. They complain that the name is confusing, while they labor to create as much confusion as they can concerning it" (p. 130).
