This may be a question for GreekTim whom may be the most intellectual person on this board but anyways here goes. I notice that I do not have any OT or NT Theology books and was thinking about getting at least one next month when my budget resets and books that will meet my book budget per month. I do not wish to get anything too complicated or too long and so have the following in mind.

OT

Gospel and Kingdom, The

Dominion and Dynasty: A Biblical Theology of the Hebrew Bible (New Studies in Biblical Theology)

NT

New Testament Theology by Leon Morris

These do not look to be as big as some others I saw and I want some opinions on them if anyone has any. Thanks..

Great books!

There is also the OT classics Von Rad along w/ Waltke, Sailhamer, B. Childs, Christopher Wright (Mission of God and his other OT books). The OP mentioned Dempster which is the best I've read! Here is a list.

NT you can add Schreiner's NT theology (he has a thick version and a thin one), Thielman, Marshall, and N. T. Wright (though I know people despise him). Beale's is a NT biblical theology, so it could fit in any category I am mentioning. Here is a list.

Whole biblical theologies are valuable too and a bit different than the above. Goldsworthy has a lot on this for multiple reading levels. Though I haven't read it yet, I've been meaning too after my thesis is finished, but Gentry & Wellum's new text is pretty popular. Schreiner just finished his biblical theology. Hamilton, Childs, & Kaiser, are a some good ones too. Christopher Wright's Mission of God would fit this category too. Here is a list.

Gotta run... fussy baby!

Thanks for tooting my horn. You are too kind, even after I shamed myself in another thread. But preachinjesus is a true intellectual. And Jonathan.Boreland is up there too. There are more, but these two and maybe a few others come to my mind first and have the credentials to back it up.

Pracher4Jesus is also reformed like me but he is not an intellectual.

I was unable to find Schreiner's NT theology that was thin.

700 pages was the smallest. Can you find one that is 300 pages or less? Thanks.

Nevermind I found it.

I forgot to mention Drama of Scripture by Bartholemew and Goheen. This book is sweeping the nation. It is so popular, that the NIV has condensed it down to a few pages to put at the intro of their Bibles. I have used their model (slightly adapted) in my teaching. It is not a deep read either. But quite good!

I have prayed about this and done everything but flip coins and I have decided to start off with Magnifying God in Christ: A Summary of New Testament Theology. For the OT I was debating on getting a OT Theology on the book of Jonah called
A Gracious and Compassionate God: Mission, salvation and spirituality in the book of Jonah (New Studies in Biblical Theology) or to get that Dominion and Dynasty which I hear is quite good.

They all sound great! Let me know what you think of Schreiner's book.

I hope it will challenge me towards a larger stepping stone of the textbook books on biblical theology. I do have a BA in Church Ministries and 2 years towards the Mdiv degree. I never took Biblical Theology but did take systematic theology as well as OTI/NTI and the survey classes. However most of my reading these days has been laymen level books on evangelism, apologetics, culture, contemporary issues, theology, and the like. I have read little in Biblical theology.

However the NSBT series produced a book called Slaves of Christ which I did not read, but I did read Macarthur's book Slave. Would Mac's book qualify as one of Biblical Theology?

Thank you for keeping me out of the "intellectuals" group!!!

"...Knowledge makes arrogant, but love edifies...."

Just thought I would do a bit of misusing the Scriptures to prove that I am proudly humble. :praying:

Actually, the list of books mentioned on this thread are good, and I trust you will find much in them to enhance your understanding and walk with Christ.

Please keep in mind that, in ALL your reading and listening, you must do as Paul urges the assembly folks - sifting it all through the truth of the Scriptures. Cling to the truth as gold, and trash the rest as merely worthless.

What is in agreement with and provable by Scriptures and Scriptural principle is solid ground worth the purchase.

EXACTLY. This is the reason for buying the book(s).

GT, thank you for the very kind words. You are a scholar and a gentleman.

As for the OP, I would recommend two unique OT/NT theologies by Mark Dever. They are:

The Message of the Old Testament

The Message of the New Testament

Dr Dever, pastor in Washington DC, is a rather studied pastor who approaches each book of the Bible in a sermon form. This is a pretty good introduction to the OT/NT from a theologically minded pastor. It might be a good first step.

As for OT and NT surveys, I would echo what GT has suggested. The three I recommend without hesitation are:

Christopher JH Wright's The Mission of God

John Goldingay's Old Testament Theology (3 vols)

GE Ladd's A Theology of the New Testament

I had no idea Dever was a PhD from Cambridge nor that he wrote something like these tomes. I'll have to check them out.

Wright's book was very formational and foundational to my thinking. I thought of mentioning Goldingay, but I haven't read it so...

And Ladd is always good.

Thank you. There are a thousand books on these topics and I chose the book I mentioned above in an earlier post as a stepping stone. But when I finish it I will probably buy deeper books. Biblical Theology is a field of which I have few books. Most of my books are Christian Living, evangelism, apologetics, contemporary issues, bible prophecy, theology/systematic theology, and the like.

Like I've said before, I believe biblical theology to be the salvation of evangelical theology.

Why so few books on it? Most are written in a systematic format. For example get a book on the Trinity and it has all the verses in the entire Bible on the doctrine all mixed in and from everywhere. Get a book on the trinity written in a Biblical theology format and it focuses on the trinity in the Gospel of John and or in a progressive style.
