had an interest discussion during our past sunday teaching service

Going over the Holy Spirt and the Gifts of His to the Church...

had about half the membership attending the morning teaching service

pastor polled the group on if Sign gifts had ceased after Apostolic Age or not

All but 1 said they still had continued

So Guess that make sit opfficially, we are a Baptist Church who believes in the continuation of all of the Gifts for today...

thankfully, pastor DID say that NO health/wealth/prosperity, Word of faith would be part of ANY gifts operating today in a Church!

Obviously all Baptists churches are free to choose whatever they want, but was this decided through a congregational vote? What i'm trying to ask is if you all believe what you believe based on polling?

When used appropriately and spontaneously I too believe the gifts are still available to believers today.

My view (according to Zondervan) is "open but cautious" regarding their use. :)

We have agreed via the pastoral/elders to an official statement of beliefs, and we have always allowed for differences in the "non essentials" "in "family' debates...

for example hold to pre mil eschatology, but pastor is Historical pre mil most church pre trib pre mill
Gifts either way viewing fine, same for arm/cal Sotierology!

That would be our general consensus on the Gifts, and we DO NOT hold to aberreant theologies like WoF, health/wealth etc as being part of the Spirit for today!

Why leave over a "non essential" doctrine of the Christian faith though?
When did the Lord ever consider doctrine "non-essential."

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (2 Timothy 3:16)

Good luck with that... I am neither a prophet or the son of one, but eventually this decision will bite the non-ongoing gift people in the hind parts.

I can see why that might be, but honestly think that since we take a 'hard line" against WoF/health and prosperity heresays...

We still do NOT allow any sign gifts to operate in services, just NOT telling people to leave if either feel that they ares till for today or if feel that is what HS has gifted them with!

Is this a DoG church

I think he means "non-essential" for fellowship/church membership and not that it's not important. While some doctrines are essential (like salvation by faith and not of works, deity of Christ, virgin birth, inerrancy/inspiration of Scripture) others are not so much. If your church's doctrinal statement is like ours, it doesn't list out every single doctrine. We only list the essential ones for membership to our church.

exactly!

MUST affirm essentials of the faith such as second coming, but can be pre post a mil

MUST ahdere to water baptism, but differ on Modes, MUST adhere to death of Christ as the atonement and paymt for sins, but differing on penal sub/moral influence etc

AGREE to saved by grace and by faith ALONE, but differ on exactly what Sotierology God used to do that!

I would however see no problem(as my church does this) of making mode and essential to membership. The gift signs would also be one. I don't make it an essential for fellowship or the like, but as far as membership I would.

There is one gift I can honestly claim to have. It's called "FAITH" I have this gift and you do to if you believe that Christ is the Son of the living God. I also believe that any of the Spiritual gifts can bestowed on anyone at any time depending on the need of it. The real question should be do we need the gifts we desire?

actually, ANY Spiritual Gift is granted by the HS Himself, as he wills them to be distributed amiong the body(Hebrews)

And ALL believers have saving faith, but there is a special kind of faith from God that I think one to have "perfect" confidence that God will do what the Bible states that He can do in a given situation!

If perfect faith is of no doubts then I must have this faith. God has worked too many miracles in my life for me to ever doubt that all things are possible with God. Right now I'm convinced my Savior could come at any moment and I try to live accordingly by being ready and watchful for His return.

that is basically the Gift that allows one to have perfect condifence in the promises of God for your life and others getting fulfilled!
