When I was a young man, our cars had "generators" but in the 1960's or so, they started calling them "Alternators." Both were belt driven generators producing power for the vehicles electrical system, whether 6 volt before and during the 1950's or the 12 volt system of today.
In the "old days" those "generators" had "brushes" that were used with segmented conduction rings (a commutator" to convert the alternating electricity produced by the generator into direct current used by the vehicle. The name change occurred when the brush commutator was replaced by "rectifiers" using diodes.
As "made sinners" we are not compatible with God's system of holiness, and so we need a "rectifier" to convert our wretchedness to holiness.
When God chooses us individually and places us spiritually into Christ, we undergo the washing of regeneration (Titus 3:5), also called the circumcision of Christ (Colossians 2:11). Thus being "rectified" we arise in Christ a new creation, created for good works (2 Corinthians 5:17).
The question those needing a "rectifier" should be asking is this, "What must we do to obtain rectification, and become in union of God?"
