OVERSEERS AND DEACONS

1Timothy 3.1-7

Oversee, perhaps mean a person who are appointed by the church as a leader of the church, not by investors, real estate, corporation, shareholders, religious denomination, pope, or any other person or a group of people who are invested in building of the church. But such person must be commissioned by congregation of the church, who is proficient in the Word of GOD and in Truth of the Word.

Paul also described the personality and character of such person, who have honesty, wisdom, ability to teach, temperate nature, hospitality, peacefulness, who is not addicted to wine of course, and humble, Paul also specified that he should be free from the love of money.

This is perhaps the most important spiritual quality of overseer, not to be greedy for money, which is the most common problem almost in every church. If overseer is not free from the love of money, the church would become as the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem during Christ visit (Matthew 21.12-14) (Mark 11.15-17) (Luke 19.45-46) and would become the den of rubbers and not the house of prayer.

Paul also mentioned that overseer must be experienced person in organizing people, and mature enough to understand the Word of GOD, and persist teaching people the true Spirituality of the Law of Moses and its Gospel (6).

There is no reason to talk here about how the churches became reach and wealthy, everybody knows how they collect money, investing in stock market, acquiring more and more property, organizing sale events, and make money of everything that may bring some profit to their pockets. As example, religious seminaries charge as much as secular colleges but give very little in reward.

The church literally operates as business and there is no end to their love of money. In contract to that material wealth of the church, the Spirituality in the church is poor and dead. Members of the churches are Spiritually poor and indoctrinated only in the church demagogy and in its denominational doctrines, but not in the Spirituality of GOD and HIs Bible.

1Timothy 3.8-13

Very much the same things Paul also wrote and about deacons. Deacon seems a person who is in second command after overseer. His duties and responsibilities lies in helping overseer to do his job in managing the church. As Paul specified again, he also must be reliable, a man of dignity, dedicated and faithful to the cause of the Gospel, not addicted to wine of course, and the most important of all, not to be the "fond of sordid gain."

"Fond of sordid gain." This means monetary gain, who is not turning the church into the business for profit. And of course both of them must be good fathers, able to manage their own families first. As Paul noticed in verse 5, "But if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of GOD?"

~ 3.8. Teaching for monetary gain: (Micah 3.11) (Acts 20.33-35) (John 10.1-12-13-16) (2Corinthians 2.17, 11.7-8) (1Timothy 3.3.8, 6.3-5) (Titus 1.10-11-16) (1Peter 5.2-4).

Suddenly, in the middle of this subject, Paul turned his attention to women, and mentioned the most common hobbit among them, the gossips. We all do know very well what the gossips are and what they do to the people. Paul not only talking here about the wives of the overseers and deacons, but in general about all women who are in Christ.

Gossip is the malicious thing and certainly considered as transgression and sin, for which every gossiper will be responsible and will give answer for such behavior to the Lord. Usually gossipers are people with envy, deceit, and bad intentions, and their gossip usually intend to hurt someone.

Such behavior is not compatible with Christian values, no matter if the gossip came from a woman or from a man or from the leaders of the church, it is a sin and must be not present in the church.

This past week in our SS lesson a text was Luke 12:1618: 16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 And he thought within himself, saying, 'What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?' 18 So he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. When I saw this passage, I thougth about churches who hold - say 3oo seats - beleveve they need to replace it it a church building that holds 1,000! WHY -IMHO we shoud be starting churches in areas that need a gosple witness. So If you are running some 250 - then take some 50 folks to start a new mission. Now you have room for another 100 folks - when you fill that up again start another mission church! Why build a building to hold a thousand .....

ALEX, I trust I am not diverting away from your OP

Of course, you know the meaning of the parable, it is about rich man who trust and live for his material wealth and not relying on GOD.
But if a church spent money to expend physical space in order to accumulate more people, I have no problem with that. GOD BLESS.
