What exactly are the duties of a deacon that are listed in the Bible, J.D.?

My thinking has always been that the body of deacons ought to be doing some or at least much of the labor that comes with shepherding a local body. As the name implies, deacons are servants and while some deacons may hold leadership in other capacities, deacons ought not be a ruling body in the local church.

I hold to the idea that Acts 6 is the model whether or not the actual word diaconos is present. Acts 6 coupled with 1 Timothy and other support passages give a clear mandate as to what the work of a servant looks like. That said, I am even in favor of training up some deacons as lay-preachers if they are so persuaded. Consider Stephan as a primary example in that regard.

Deacons should be the busiest, most loving, and compassionate men in the church.

    Blessings

I read somewhere recently that the majority of SB pastors stay in one place 4-7 years (ever changing, of course). And it does indeed take a very blessed man to stay longer, successfully.

In the 11 years of our current pastor's ministry, deacons have not rotated. Three of them were hand picked by our current pastor, and this has created some problems over the years.

And I imagine the Lord blessed your pastorate greatly for your perspective in these matters. We're having some very deeply rooted problems in this area. I do not wish to expound on that; just to say that we, as a congregation, have enabled so long that we're having a hard time back tracking to a more healthy plane.

Do not misunderstand my tone. Pastor is my brother-in-law, and I love him dearly.

Unless things have changed recently it was 18-24 months. The highest I am aware of was 4 years.

The CBAA is around 9 years.

Since I always try and be "an equal opportunity offender", I'll ask a question, myself. Please name one (any one) duty listed in the Bible for pastors? Not for bishops and/or elders now, but just for pastors.
And if any are so inclined, name one "duty" for any of the other of the twenty-some-odd 'spiritual gifts' listed in Scripture.
