I think the bow tie is the closest that one can come to wearing a clergy collar...Maybe this is Bob's secret wish to wear one,,,,lol

PS. I have a few spares

Cheers,

Jim

I ain't "sissy-fied" enough to have an earring----in any ear I have

BUT (and its a big one)

I did try to talk my wife into letting me buy a Harley "Hog"----and she told me this---------"It just wouldn't look good for a preacher to have a motorcycle!!!"-----Blackbird went through the "spill" of---"But all of my friends all have one!!"---to no avail-----there's simply no excuse in her book for me to have a motorcycle!!!

No earrings in the ears of a Cajun born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana----lived half of his married life in the South's finest, Mississippi---and now resides in the Heart of Dixie---Alabama---no, no earrings for this Cajun!!!! Sha!!!!! An earring in any ear of any man---no matter how manly the man is----is still "Sissy-fied" in blackbird's book!!!!

Were my own pastor to show up wearing an earring, with his hair dyed (it's white), and wearing a bow-tie, especially if he rode in on his motorcycle, I would probably be laughing out loud or at least snickering continually during the entire service, like so -

hence completely distracting from the service, at best.

[Edited to add!] the "especially if he rode in on his motorcycle" part.

don' mind my pastor wearin' an earring (just not a nose ring with that wedge in the tongue) and comin' in on a Harley Davidson or a big Honda with ape hangers as long as he don' dress up in 'em biker's leathers with the patches and all.

As long too as he preaches what the church agrees to as sound doctrine, and behaves in and out of church in what the brethren agree to as scriptural behavior.

In the OT, an earring was a sign of ownership...of being a slave. The NT states we are to be slaves to Christ, so all pastors should wear one :)

I used to have 2 in my left ear during my teen and early twenties until I saw a 50+ man with a white mullet and his shirt buttoned down to his belly button. I made a vow I would NEVER be that man, and took them out that same day and haven't looked back :D

While I agree that there is no scripture against men wearing earrings, I am very old fashioned and don't think men should wear them. I wouldn't go to a church where the pastor wore an earring.

My understanding about males wearing one earring is that in one ear it says "I'm homosexual", and in the other ear it says "I'm normal". I don't know which ear is which.

If you don't know, then by all means don't wear one!!! Gotcha!

As for the Motorcycle thing.. our State Convention (WVBC) at Parchment Valley holds a CMA (Christian Motorcycle Association) event every August.

This yr I was out there for another event... and was eating lunch in the Cafeteria, and a lady walks up to me and then I realized it was a lady in our neighborhood that goes to a sister church... that happens to have biker Sunday each summer.

So Blackbird, join CMA... there are plenty of pastors here in WV that are in it. One Area Minister from our state convention!

Simple questions....
Should a pastor wear an earring?

Any Scripture to back this up?

Well I can't think of any scripture that prohibits pastor's from wearing earings. When looking for a good pastor I search his internal qualifications and not what impression I get from looking at his exterior.

I will often get the impression if a guy wears an earing that he has been in a lot more mischeif in his life is a more radical guy, possibly uses or use to use drugs, and could be gay.

Now why do I think this? I don't know it can be really silly, but that is what society taught me.

I have known some very noble christians in my life though who wore earings. I have learned the hard way not to judge how someone may dress on his outside.

Doug Chaplain, from the TV Show the Bounty Hunter is one such example. He has tatoos, long hair, and earings. At first I was turned off by this man. However his faith in God changed my impression of him. He always prays to God and helps so many people who are lost to crime in their lives turn to Jesus.

There is a Catholic Priest I enjoy watching on TV a lot Father John Corapi who I noticed wears an earing. When he preaches he always preaches how he came from the wrong side of the track. Although I am not Catholic, I am baptist, I do not exclude from my life those ministers of other faiths who can preach great words of wisdom.

When I saw the subject of this thread, at first I thought it was going to be about women pastors!

I think it depends on the kind of church the pastor is pastoring, and whether the pastor is doing it to be "edgy" or look hip to younger people. Those would not be good reasons, imo. In some churches, some of the men might have earrings and he would not be seen as being that different. Personally, it would not bother me if he were a good pastor with sound doctrine, and was not doing this to have a hip persona.

If I was church searching, whether or not the pastor had an earing in an ear would be quite a ways down on my list of things that would keep me from going back.

Having said that, in all the churches I've been in (and when I was church searching I was in quite a few) I have never come across a pastor with an earing. Youth pastor a time or two, but never the "senior" pastor.

Genesis 35:2-4

So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone." So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem.

"So Aaron said, “Take the gold rings from the ears of your wives and sons and daughters, and bring them to me.”
Exodus 32:2 NLT
So we can assume that the men to whom Aaron was speaking did not themselves wear earrings.

And, how does that apply today? Most men I know who wear earring don't do so to look like a woman, nor for religious purposes. They just like an earring. I guess they think it makes them look tougher or cool. Personally, I think it's stupid. But, I keep my opinion to myself. Why blow a friendship over an earring? And, why discredit a pastor simply over an earring?

Isn't there something in the bible about being effeminant? Ie men should not wear womens clothing apparel etc...

During Biblical times, we have records of men wearing earrings, so that would be a non-issue.

Its the principle of the thing. Wearing womens apparel I think would also mean jewelry meant for women. Though society is chaning. In ancient days men would wear earings because they were dedicated slaves. So take it for what it is.

I have been sitting back reading the replies and all I can think is that there are alot of close/narrow minded people in here. So what if a pastor wears an earring? I attend a church where the pastor wears jeans and harley boots and rides a harley and still his message every sunday is awesome oh yeah and he wears an earring. Do I see a problem with it..no I dont. I dont believe a Pastor has to dress "above the crowd" so to speak and the more I study this subject the more Pastors want to be on our level so to speak and not above us. One church I visited this summer had the pastor in jeans and earrings and flip flops and he was so personable, so easy to talk to, and his messages...wow they were so awesome and so relevant to life today full of scripture to back them up. If the church hadnt been 40 miles from home I would still be going there but I am perfectly happy with the "come as you are" church that I have found and its only about 3 minutes from my house.
