Pastors with Earrings????

Its the principle of the thing. Wearing womens apparel I think would also mean jewelry meant for women. Though society is chaning. In ancient days men would wear earings because they were dedicated slaves. So take it for what it is.

Sorry, but the Bible doesn't equivocate with the "principle of the thing" argument. I'm not arguing for earrings...I'm just pointing out that one cannot argue Biblically the "women's apparel" angle here. Scriptures simply don't support it.

Jesus wore a robe. Does that make him suspect?

I expect if you took a poll that it is the older generation that objects to ear rings and the younger generation that does not mind. I could care less if he/she has a ring in his/her ear, I want to hear a great message.

I agree. And dress varies from culture to culture. There are those in the US who so believe in the ethnocentrism of the American culture that they believe any dress, customs, etc. that do not match their ideal of the American culture has to be wrong, and thus not Christian.

In our culture it was unaccepted until homosexuals started wearing an earing in one ear (left or right I forget which) Then it grew in popularity and became accepted. But it started with rebellion. Cultures are dynamic. They are always changing. Some changes are for the better, others are questionable. For instance, I do not mind wearing one ear ring [in each ear of course] but I personally do not like to see multiple ear rings in ears. But that is my preference. I so not like tatoos, but realize that is because when I was a kid a tatoo was considered the mark of a really low class person. That has changed in society at large ... and it does not matter if I like it or not. I figure tatoos and multiple ear rings will fade as our culture changes. I do not like nose rings at all not other body piercing. But, again, I realized it is because of the cultural norm when I was a kid.

So, I do not see the ear ring as faminine or masculine, but a change in our culture.

So...if culture can change one way, does that mean it can change another?

Also...the earring thing...I've never seen a source for that. Is it true, or is it an urban legend? Could it be that the gays tried to co-opt the practice, and failed?

A more common thing was for sailors to wear an earring; it meant that the wearer had sailed around the world.

Sorry, but the wearing of a ring in ear, male and female has been a norm in some cultures from the beginning of time. Some even had rings in lips, nose and other places.

Take Africa as a sample, and the pirates who sailed the high seas.

I still have a problem with jewellery worn by the preacher standing at that holy desk we call the pulpit.

Dress like the streets and you may draw the street crowd, but when I preached at a mission I didn't drink alcohol to attract the people, and I surely didn't wear dirty and ragged clothing.

For many years the English defined Christian missionary culture to the world to be Christian in many nations was to be english. Now that the English have lost their world empire why can't the americans do the same? After all the Romans did. Since we're the most powerful why can't we enforce american christianity huh?

Then, this explains why the early English missionaries learned the language and culture of the foreign lands and lived with the people.

I think I would wear either longer trousers or higher boots to make sure the pantyhose are covered.

Yes they did which is why in India, and East Africa they speak english as a national language. They also drive on the wrong side of the road despite what the rest of the world says. The reason the english did that was so that they could better understand the people in order to communicate how to be properly english like puting milk or cream in the tea cup first then pouring the tea. How to make horrible sausages and fried bread with poached eggs in the morning for breakfast. How to always end a statement in speach with a question. Stuff like that. I blame the English Missionaries. Look at how much John Wesley hated america (specifically Georgia!). Which is why americans don't do those things like serve steak and kidney pie. Or eat prawn flavored chips (excuse me crisps).

Ah yes... good old southern sweet iced tea! Nothing finer! All though I never saw anyone use hot water from the faucet. I run it through the coffee maker myself.
