Paul Ryan Rushes to White House to Tell Trump Votes Are Lacking to Repeal Obamacare

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, facing a revolt among conservative and moderate Republicans, rushed to the White House Friday afternoon to inform President Trump he did not have the votes to pass legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act and to decide whether to pull the bill from consideration.

The president and the speaker faced the humiliating prospect of a major defeat on legislation promised for seven years, since the landmark health legislation was signed into law. President Trump had demanded a vote regardless, which has been scheduled for Friday afternoon. But House leaders were leaning against such a public loss.

The House opened debate Friday on what could be one of the most consequential pieces of legislation in years, a bill that could roll back a major, established social welfare program, a feat that is almost unheard of.

Yes, the GOP made an agreement to obstruct everything that Obama wanted even before he took office and they stuck with that for 8 years.

That was due to MOST of what he wanted was bad news for America!

Nice try ... won't hold water. They simply were playing dirty, racist politics and no considering the good of the country. They are continuing the not good for the country even to this day. Trump care would be horrible for the poor in this country..

Personally I am glad this bill didn't even get out the door.
IMO a "replace" would have caused far more trouble than any possible good
I said all along I would be fine with a "repair" of Obamacare.

NOW they must come up with Obamacare 2.0.
It will Probably need several tweaks.

Also, to me its fine that Obama gets to keep his socialized health care legacy.

Trump said yesterday that there was no Plan B.
He also said if the GOP didn't approve this plan as written the American people would be stuck with Obamacare as it is currently configured.

So, unless he is lying (a distinct possibility) we are stuck with Obamacare.

Yeah, it's been pulled, no big surprise. Ryan will have a hard time recovering from this, Trump not so much.

Very tough issue to tackle, since there's so many cross-goals involved - make healthcare more affordable, cover more people, get the government out of it when there's gadzillions of Americans on Medicare and Medicaid, Obamacare was a monster of a bill and this one would've just been a band-aid on the problem.

Trump says he's done with the issue, but I don't believe him because Obamacare will go bust and he'll either have to put up with a PR nightmare or continue funding Obamacare. I think they should go with a more incremental replace and repeal, do it step-by-step.

Just an overhaul, like what you do with a bad car engine.

Obamacare 2.0.

Because this is Trump's plan to get rid of Paul Ryan?

Here we go... Breitbart, of course.
----
Republican officials in Congress and the White House are now openly discussing finding a GOP replacement to Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) as Speaker of the House, after Ryan failed to pass the American Health Care Act out of the House and misled the public and President Donald Trump when he promised repeatedly the bill would pass.

Role reversal big time, as republicans tried to stop bad agendas, and now Dems stopping good ones!

Not a good comparison. The GOP holds a majority and should have been able to pass it ... except the GOP is two parties, the Freedom Caucus and the others. Until Trump learns to build a consensus with his moderates and the Democrats the Freedom Caucus can hold him and the government hostage ... and nothing will get done.

And I shudder to think what would get done if Trump starts negotiating with Schumer and Pelosi!

Politics is the art of compromise. That usually means no one gets all they want ... and that means to get something done you end up with a law that is not too far off the middle and no one is totally happy or totally angry except those out on the fringes.

Trump did not reach out to the Democrats and when he tweeked the bill he either lose Freedom caucus votes or moderate votes. Classic case of Catch-22.
