DoD wants to cut PCS moves by 50%

When reading DODI 1315-18 a GI may
have the option of "home basing" when assigned to a short tour. (ie Korea)
In this case, a GI will not move his family as he will be returning to his base.

But Suppose he is stationed at Ft Lewi, Washington - and receives orders for Korea.
His HOR is Atlanta, Ga - with no home basing - he family will PCS on official (paid) orders to Atlanta during this short tour.

At 4 months till DEROS - he receives orders for Ft Hood, Texas. Thus his dependents will now be PCS from Atalant to Ft Hood at
government expense.

Ft Lewis - Atlanta = 2700 miles
Atlanta - Ft Hood = 9 00 miles

Total = ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 3600 miles

Ft Lewis - Ft Hood 2100 miles

Difference of 1500 miles


I contend if a GI goes to OCONUS - his family stays put - and will not PCS till he returns to CONUS

NOTE: if they are in US military housing - they may remain while the sponsor is OCONUS

If the moves are needed to meet military objectives, fine. If to keep the administrative folks busy rearranging the chairs on our bases, cutting unnecessary relocations seems sound.

How about this - is it necessary to move a family to move from Ft Lewis, WA to the East coast and then back to Ft Lewis when the GI is going to end up back at the same base, when he returns from Korea? Are those dependent moves considered to meet military objectives?

One of the things I like about our current Administration is they will try one approach to a problem, and if it does NOT work, they will adjust. They are going to cut back on PCS moves, and may revise the policy if problems arise.
