From the 8th to 10th of September, the ECLJ was in Brussels for an essential mission: to directly confront European Union policymakers with the harsh reality faced by Christians on the ground in Syria, Algeria, and Morocco.
Thanks to your unwavering support, we conducted three days of intense mobilization to ensure that the defense of our persecuted brothers and sisters is placed at the very heart of the diplomatic agenda.
Meanwhile, in Morocco, we alerted European authorities to the total lack of legal recognition for local Moroccan Christians, whose family status remains strictly subject to Islamic law. We are preparing the legal defense for a courageous Christian couple who are currently facing imminent death threats from their own family. We also raised the alarm regarding the case of 150 foreign Christians brutally expelled in 2010, requesting a review of their files.

In Syria: Refusing the Sacrifice of Christians
On September 8th, we co-organized a major conference at the European Parliament focusing on the future of Christians in Syria. Today, a historic turning point is unfolding as the new Syrian government—stemming from the Islamist group Al-Nusra Front—seeks international normalization. In this fragile transition, we refuse to let Christian communities become the forgotten casualties of geopolitical realignments.
Alongside prominent diplomatic figures like Mairead McGuinness, the EU Special Envoy on Freedom of Religion, as well as Bishop Georges Masri of Aleppo and Bishop Georges Assadourian of Damascus, our religious freedom advocacy officer, Thibault van den Bossche, delivered an unequivocal message. Syrian Christians are not seeking token privileges or cosmetic quotas. They demand equal citizenship guaranteed by the law, meaningful participation in institutions, and the freedom to live out their faith openly. True religious freedom cannot be limited to keeping church doors open; it requires the recognition of their fundamental rights.In Algeria and Morocco: Breaking the Silence
On the margins of this conference, our team secured several exclusive meetings with the European External Action Service and the cabinet of the Commissioner for the Mediterranean to break the silence surrounding the alarming regression of religious freedom in North Africa.
In Algeria, the situation is critical. As repression intensifies, all places of worship belonging to the Protestant Church of Algeria (official since 1972) are now closed. Christians there face police raids and the confiscation of Bibles under the threat of anti-proselytism laws, while the humanitarian service Caritas remains banned despite the historic visit of Pope Leo XIV.
