Perversion of word meaning is used to defend false premises. Note we never talk about a mother's right to murder her unborn child, but we quibble over blocking women's health care.

We never talk about a non-parental right to mutilate adolescents, but we quibble over blocking health care for kids.

If someone cannot defend their biblical view by explaining the apparent meaning of scriptural passages, often we see efforts to besmirch the advocates of truth. For example, say a person points our the ESV mistranslation of Revelation 13:8 which is a factually correct assessment. Those defending the error might charge the messenger of truth with attacking the scholarship of the ESV translators even though the assessment was made without any special training in translation.

Ever wonder why so many posts disparage the person holding a differing view?
1) What you are missing (against the man)
2) Such a false teaching would mean that the Potter was subject to the whims of the clay, (strawman)
3) If you cannot see that (against the man)
4) Nonsense. You routinely engage in intellectual misrepresentation (against the man)
5) I notice that God is not present in your world. (strawman)
6) What Bible did you get that from (strawman)

Anytime you see charges disparaging the person rather than the position a red flag should drop, as fallacious argumentation is being used to bolster an argument. Also anytime you see strawman arguments, fallacious argumentation is being used to change the topic.

I do wish you would find another pony to ride. This one is dead and deserves no more beating.

LOL - I do wish YOU would find another pony to ride.

Trying to improve the quality of our discussions is a pony worth riding...

Van, there is no problem with you saying that the ESV translation of Rev. 13:8 is wrong. I agree with you and have said so. The problem comes when you besmirch the character of the translators by saying that they were 'agenda-driven.'
There are reasons why the ESV translators chose the rendering that they did; I disagree with them, but I know what they are and I accept that they know a whole lot more Greek than I do. I explained those reasons to you, but you weren't listening.

A little more humility from you would reap dividends in the way you are treated on this board,.

The agenda was to move the time of writing names in the Lamb's book of life to before creation to mesh with their mistaken understanding of Ephesians 1:4

There is absolutely no support in Greek grammar for changing since to before.

Recently in the News, our government has disclosed that agents of China have sought to silence and harass their dissidents using various tactics such as disinformation.

Those on the left of our political spectrum use similar tactics to silence and harass those advocating against leftist doctrine. See post #1 for examples.

Do we see similar tactics used against dissidents of Arminianism or Calvinism or KJV Only-ism? Would Christians not "of this world" use the same types of disinformation to silence and harass other believers?

My observation, @Van, is…

1. …that you are one of the worst posters that disparage others because they hold different views..

….logs and splinters and all that…. And….

2. Just because someone points out where you are in error doesn’t mean they are disparaging you…

peace to you

Where I see merit in @Van 's post (I'm not getting into the secondary issue of translation/ interpretation) is that he's correct regarding how Christians often debate or argue with one another. @canadyjd points out that disagreement does not mean disparaging, but often it does leads to disparaging.

Another post addressing me, "you are one of the worst" claiming that such comments are not disparaging me. I kid you not.

You are accusing others of doing things that are a big part of your posting history, Van., including attempting to present yourself as a victim of disparaging comments.

I suggest you lead by example, maybe that will help.

peace to you

And still this poster addresses me, and not the topic. Anytime you see charges disparaging the person rather than the position a red flag should drop, as fallacious argumentation is being used to bolster an argument. Also anytime you see strawman arguments, fallacious argumentation is being used to change the topic.

You referred to yourself as a “messenger of truth” in your first post.

It’s your thread, Van. Have at it

peace to you

Only if we "self police" the use of fallacious argumentation will the quality of our bible discussions rise above the norms now found even in this thread.

Jesus taught we should speak plainly, but gently, as we try to expand His ministry.

Start with policing ourselves, then we won’t have time to worry about what others are saying

peace to you
