Phyllis Schlafly dies

It's unfortunate that women like Beyonce and Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan are so far to the left that they can't see the forest for the trees. These ladies are and were not nearly on point as they think [and thought] they were when it comes to women's issues.

With that being said, neither was Phyllis Schlafly. I'm sorry for her family's loss and I appreciate her support and defense of the nuclear family and conservative values such as Biblical marriage.

But I think she spent so much time fighting the extremism of the left that she became the extremism of the right.

She didn't believe that married women could be raped because when married, women "consent" and rape is a moot point for the wife. And that's not one of her core beliefs of the '60's or '70's, but of the 21st century.

She also believed and reported, as of 2015, that too many girls were going to college and that's what led to their being raped there - an imbalance of female to male enrollees. And that while young men were much smarter than young women, the young men were less likely to enroll in colleges today because jobs were being given to "easy-to-control and lower paid foreigners".

Surely the truth about women and their value is somewhere between Betty Friedan and Phyllis Schlafly.

Jerome,

[1] From her own words at a speech at Bates College in Maine in 2007 -

"By getting married, the woman has consented to sex, and I don't think you can call it rape"

[2] From her own words in an interview at Washington University asking for her clarification of those words. http://www.studlife.com/archives/Press/2008/05/05/QuestionsforPhyllisSchlafly/

"Could you clarify some of the statements that you made in Maine last year about martial rape?

I think that when you get married you have consented to sex. That’s what marriage is all about, I don’t know if maybe these girls missed sex ed. That doesn’t mean the husband can beat you up, we have plenty of laws against assault and battery. If there is any violence or mistreatment that can be dealt with by criminal prosecution, by divorce or in various ways. When it gets down to calling it rape though, it isn’t rape, it’s a he said-she said where it’s just too easy to lie about it."

[3] From her own words from your article.

... malicious feminists who have lobbied for laws that punish spousal rape just like stranger rape...

She was dead wrong.

Rape is rape - and if proven, SHOULD BE punished the same no matter if you are married to the man or if he is a stranger. By the same token, false accusation of rape should be prosecuted the same no matter if you are married to the man or not.

How anyone can believe that being married to your rapist nullifies the rape is beyond me.

Are there false allegations of rape in a marriage? Yes. I agree with Phyllis there. And you provided one example from the news. It's only fair that I give you one from the news proving my point that she is wrong and that a wife can be raped while still married. That's where I vehemently disagree with Phyliss.

[Well.....I can't post the links - they are too sexually explicit. You will have to take my word for it.]

You are right here, Scarlett - Phyllis was really an anti-feminist, a response from the right to the Glora Steinems, Simone Beavoiurs, Betty Friedens of the left.

Some of her viewpoints were as retro and dated as her hairstyle - guess she thought there was no such thing as marital rape. Didn't think "I do" translates into consenting to sex on demand and then I never understand why having more women in colleges led to an increase in campus rapes. You'd think the effect would just be the opposite.
