Pill creator regrets population decline

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--A chemist who led to the invention of the birth control pill says he regrets the demographic catastrophe that has resulted from people using the contraceptive device to separate reproduction from sexuality.

Carl Djerassi, the 85-year-old Austrian chemist who was one of three whose formulation of synthetic hormones paved the way for the pill, wrote an opinion piece in the Austrian newspaper Der Standard lamenting the way the pill has been used.

Austria's population now includes more people over age 65 than under 15, and Djerassi said the country soon will face an "impossible situation" as the working class becomes too small to support the needs of senior citizens. Each family in Austria needs to produce three children to maintain population levels, he said, but on average couples have 1.4 children.

The US population would also be decreasing if not for immigration. Austria, I suspect, doesn't want to be polluted with inferior people. <G>

How is it possible to have 4 tenths of a child? :laugh: :laugh: Actually, with nearly everyone trying to get into the US, the population here increases while decreasing everywhere else.

In any case, it could all be according to God's plan. My belief is that everything works out according to God's plan''whatever that may be. I don't really need to know; all I need to know is that God is Sovereign and in control even when it doesn't look like He is.

The same thing is being played out here in the US.. .
This is why we are facing a Social Security meltdown in a few yrs..

The amount of working people will not be able to support the baby boomer generation...

This is not only because of the pill but because we have been legally killing off future workers, tax payers, SS contributors, since Roe v Wade.

I have been saying this for yrs...
Part of our economic crisises we will face has a direct link to all the abortions we allow.

Imagine all the workers, and potential jobs that we have killed off.
Imagine all that tax revenue...
Imagine all the FICA payments...

We have shot ourselves in the foot.. .

NOW we have a deficit.

It is relational to a married man and woman, and if it was designed by God to be linked with reproduction, a child would be conceived each time the act was done. Family planning is important, and while God ultimately opens and shuts the womb, there is no regret in being responsible.

It is relational to a married man and woman, and if it was designed by God to be linked with reproduction, a child would be conceived each time the act was done. Family planning is important, and while God ultimately opens and shuts the womb, there is no regret in being responsible.

When it was accepted and believed to be God's choice of opening and closing the womb, people took their faith more seriously, especially when facing the responsibilities which went along with family life and support. Society also had laws in place which protected the family: laws which made adultry an act against the vows of marriage and allimony and child support and property division a restraining consequence to consider.

The pill made it possible for people to more predictably plan when not to have children. Then, instead of completely relying on trust that God would provide if and when children came along...... people then had the opportunity to plan their budgets, their schooling and carreers, the spacing of their children......... and if they were inclined to go out of the bounds of their vows ...... greater assurances that the consequence of pregnancy wouldn't occur. The man had always had his options of 'protection'. Now the woman had her options of protection and control. The boundaries of marital vows started loosening and also the restraint of unmarried behavior as well. Instead of respecting the gift of sexuality within marriage, society loosened its judgement of morals, and gradually the concept of blame for divorce became moot with no-fault divorce. In short order, abortion became more than a crisis medical procedure to save the life of a woman with child, and was decriminalized from standing alone as an indiscriminate demand.

Yes, I think the pill had a lot to do with where society is today......not only in the fewer children being born, but also with the amoral twisting of society from that which used to honor and protect the home for the nurturing of children....... to that where homes are breaking down and more and more, the state is taking responsibility for children (and a poor substitute it is).

Knowledge and science creates new options which didn't exist in 'the natural'. Those new options create a new responsibility upon people to make choices. Those choices are made based upon various motivations: Those motivations spring from desires and principles of judgement centered in the heart. Though we always have a choice to inquire of God as to what he would have our choice to be..... the fact is most people make their decisions based upon their own reasoning.

There may be no regret in being responsible. But without considering what might be God's will, we may regret not including him when making our decisions: We then don't know if the consequences we face later are the result of poor decisions or have confidence that it was part of God's plan.
