I like mostly non aromatics. I have several English blends (Virginia, Orientals, Latakia...perhaps with some perique) and Virginia's.

For a while I smoked one cigar a day. But at $11+ a pop it added up. Very good pipe tobacco costs much less (more upfront costs, though).

I have several pipes. All are briar. My favorite is made in Columbia TN. It's a Briar Works. But I have Savinellis (Italy), Peterson's (Ireland) and a couple of Nordics (Denmark).

How thick do you pack it down? Do you only use a match to light it?

You fill it (loosely) and push it down about half way. Then fill it and push it down about 3/4 way. Then fill it and press it flat. Resistance shouldn't feel any more than pressing a marshmallow. Make sure it isn't hard to draw.

I use a Zippo pipe lighter. Light it by hovering the flame over the top and puff. Use a tamper to put it out (that was the charring light....or "false light"). Then light it and you're good to go.

Thanks for the info. If I get a pipe, I’ll let you know how it goes.

peace to you

I will leave all that to you in favor of trying to breathe clean air.

Anybody (other than me,) enjoy pipes and/ or cigars?

It’s a Christmas tradition for us ‘guys’ to enjoy a fine cigar after the dinner, my brothers and all the SILs. The cigar fellowship is brief though, none are habitual cigar smokers, it’s just what we do at Christmas.

I smoked a pipe between the ages of 16 and 22. Borkum Riff was my favorite. But I saw myself go from being content with a long daily smoke to increased smokes, then while working at a wood shop I took my pipe and it was lit much of the time. Finally I reached the level of a pouch (1.5 ounces) per day, where I had started with that much per week. I started going for the greater convenience of cigars, little cigars, and finally cigarettes-- no having to clean the bowl continuously and having stems broken. That was when I knew I need to quit this habit altogether. I did for about a year; then after being "between jobs" for 5 weeks I picked it up again, but then quit again, for good. Almost. About 15 years ago I got back into it a little. But I saw myself doing the same thing I did before-- going for cigarillos instead of a pipe for the same convenience. Now it's been 12? 14? years, I don't know. Oh, but I did find a web site called Christian Pipe Smokers and discussed this topic with others, along with how they thought it was simply a private pleasure.

As for now ... I am not smoking, and don't want to add anything like that to my retirement spending, especially while my funds keep sinking. But I have thought that if I am diagnosed with a fatal disease, i might get a new pipe and use it occasionally, as long as I'm sure it's not dangerous, such as my falling asleep with a lit one., or not having enough muscle control. I would expect the disease to take me before a new one from the tobacco. Morally, that would just leave the issue of example; not being a good one. And maybe I've already spoiled that by saying what I've said here.

Just one more thing ... health coverage. We could lose it or start paying more for premiums. Or lying. Absolute No to the last one.

I smoked a pipe for about a month when I was 20 and met a pipe smoker who had mouth and throat cancer.
I wanted to live longer than he was.
