Please Define the Words "The Atonement"

I am not sure exactly what others mean when they use the term "the atonement."

Can anyone tell me exactly what is meant when they use that term?

It seems that some use it as being equivalent to "propitiatory sacrifice" but that certainly cannot be its meaning in the following verse:

"For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people" (Heb.2:17; NIV).
Thanks!

The atonement is a blood sacrifice to reconcile sinners to God through the forgiveness of sins. In the OT, the blood of animals covered the sins of the people until Messiah came. In the NT, the blood of Christ completely washes away sin.

Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

Thanks Amy,

In the OT the Hebrew word translated "atonement" is kaphar and I cannot find even one place where that word is used to mean a "blood sacrifice."

What evidence from the Bible can you give that demonstrates that the words "the atonement" means a blood sacrifice?

Thanks!

God decided what the atonement would be.

Exodus 29:38-39 Now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the altar; two lambs of the first year day by day continually. The one lamb thou shalt offer in the morning; and the other lamb thou shalt offer at even:

This was done in the Temple everyday. God required a perfect, spotless lamb to be slain.
I also gave you a verse saying without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin. It's God's rules. A life for a life. The atonement is a payment in blood for our sins. The sacrifice was made as a substitute for you and me.

An atonement is "satisfaction or reparation for a wrong or injury; amends." The blood sacrifice of Jesus is our atonement.

Amy, there is no Baptist church where I live but my beliefs are closer to those of a lot of Baptist chuches than any others.

Should the fact that it is not possible for me to attend a Baptist church exclude me from participating on this particular forum?

Thanks!

Amy, in the verses referring to the "day of atonement" it was the priest who made atonement:

"For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD" (Lev.16:30).

The Greek word translated "atonement" means "to cover, make reconciliation, cover over with pitch."

A sacrifice may provide for those things but it is not the "atonement" itself.

If you would take this to the other denoms section we can talk about it, but I really don't know what point you're trying to make. This is clear in the bible. There is no mystery surrounding it. The atonement for sin requires blood.

Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin
What the blood of lambs and bull in OC could not do for us, putting away the sin, the blood of Christ atoned/covered provided satisfaction to the Ftaher for the sin debt owed Him, as the soul that sins must die!

Jesus was the substitute who bore the full penalty in His own body for the punishment/ judgement of God against my sin!
