In a recent conversation about this subject there was ALOT of heat and controversy. I am persuaded that the papacy does fulfill the prophecy of Scripture regarding Antichrist. This was the near universal testimony of the Reformation, but it seems to have fallen into disfavor today.

What do you think?

I agree. I am an oddball at my church for thinking this, so I just don't talk about it anymore.

I interested to hear how they and you came to believe this.

What fufillments do you see that brings you to this conclusion?

I assume you are speaking of a specific scriptures since the scriptures speak of many antichrists that were among them even when John wrote his first Epistle.

1 John 2:18
Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour.
NKJV

2 John 7
For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
NKJV

I voted "no" because I think the Antichrist will be at least half-Jewish and from the Middle East (of course, there could be a future Pope like this, in which case, it could be him but I don't think there is any substantiation for showing that the Bible is talking about a pope).

Since the Antichrist will be like a false Christ (seeming to recover from the fatal wound, attempt to mimic the resurrection of Jesus?), I think his life will have parallels with Jesus and so he will not be a leader with power, at least at first.

But these are just my musings at present. I don't think any of us can know this.

HP: Could the possibility exist it may be a president or leader of a nation(s) (as in a one world alliance) in cahoots with the Roman system? ( and every other ism out there for that matter)

You are correct. The Scriptures you referenced here do not speak of the Antichrist, but of antichrists, although it mentions Antichrist which is coming, and many antichrists that had come.

The Scriptures that have convinced me are from Daniel, 2 Thess, and Revelation. I will share more later in order to answer your question.

I had to vote no. But, I do believe the Papacy will play some role in the Antichrist's regime. Perhaps the harlot who rides on the back of the beast as described in Revelation 17?

RB: Not if the prophesies have already been fulfilled.
HP: Assuming that it is a double prophesy or one yet to be fulfilled, could it be a president or a leader of a nation(s) (as in a one world alliance) in cahoots with the Roman system?

A person who is an Amillennialist tends to think the papacy is a direct fulfillment of the text in question.

I thought an amillenialist does not believe in a literal earthly thousand year reign of Christ, I thought they believed that we are living in His reign right now her on earth and that the thousand years are not literal but shows a long period of time but with an end.

Maybe I don't understand an Amillennialist, help me out.

Yes, in reference to the millennial reign, but as to other texts that have to do with eschatology, they offer their positions.

I am shocked, and awed that Protestanism has drifted away from their foundational belief that the Antichrist is the Papacy! You guys who voted no sure have let the Council of Trent in 1545 to batter you and bruise you Protestants up haven't you? This is JUST what the virus of Futurism, implanted by the Roman Jesuit Francisco Ribera, and the virus of Preterism, implanted by Luis de Alcazar has done!

Paul warned that the Man of Sin, the Little Horn, would be revealed AFTER the "falling away". All the early church fathers agreed that the Little Horn would arise almost immediately after the fall of the Pagan Roman Empire.

The Papacy is the ONLY power that meets this description!

Well, if it makes any difference, nearly every significant Reformation movement and leader held that the papacy (and not an individual pope) was the anti-christ. This was the view of Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, Knox, and most other Protestants of that era. Personally, I tend to put more stock in the opinions of these giants of the faith than I do in the eschatology popularized by contemporary writers like Hal Lindsey and a host of others that hold similar views.
