Amy, I don't know what's happened to you, my dear friend, but you seem to have changed somewhat in your posts, especially when it comes to dealing with those who hold to a view different than yours. I miss my friend.

I haven't changed. But I admit I can have my buttons pushed. When someone says that the "scholars" are the ones who understand scripture and the common man is ignorant, that burns me up. I hate arrogance.

You and I disagree, but you have never been know it all or arrogant. That's the difference. We have a mutual respect. I appreciate that and it's what enables us to have a civil discussion.

Exactly. Calvinism is a minority. It is a majority here, among people who study and care enough about God's Word to spend time debating and defending it, but a decided minority in the marginal church in America. I think that is quite telling.

Do you have special doorways in your home that allow you to pass through unimpeded?

With all of the vast amount of studying you have done, did you somehow miss the Scripture on pride and haughtiness?

You are all over the place. Initially you were thrilled you were in the majority...and now you have done a complete 180 and are thrilled your theology is in the minority.

That's the one bad thing most people see concerning those who have a reformed theology.

They hold this elitist attitude. They also tend to then go further and feel that only those who know the languages should say what the Bible says. We have therefore replaced the Spirit who leads into all truth to the "pseudo-scholars"!

You're not making an argument here. You are attacking a whole group of people. This is ad hominem.

When you call someone arrogant in a debate or elitist, etc... you yourself are being abrasive. Name calling is the essence of abrasiveness.

The ones who often accuse others of being abrasive are often the ones who are most abrasive. The ones they accuse of being abrasive are usually less personal in their posts and more about the formation of solid arguments.

Another thing, look how the man on here addresses a lady, Amy. Ridiculous.

What does this have to do with the doctrines of grace? It is another ad hominem.

Insinuating that he is not a gentleman is abrasive.

Then the abrasive ones that say to one another "You're not abrasive!"

Once again, what does this have to do with the DoG?

The laity is too stupid to understand God's word? Only "scholars" and "professors" have to ability to interpret God's word correctly?


This is the perfect example of arrogance. And worse, it is directed towards the brethren.


It reminds me of the Catholic church, who decided the Word of God did not belong in the hands of the common man. I am thankful for men like Tynedale who died to put the Word in the hands of stupid people like me.

Is it not also arrogance for laity to assume that they can go to the Bible and dig out as much or more than those who have dedicated a decade of their lives in universities specializing in the study of the Scriptures?

Is it not the epitome of arrogance to not do the work that others have done and then claim that you are at least as able as they are?

A laymen can go to the Bible and get all he needs.

A scholar can go and get more by way of historical grammatical exposition.

If this is not true then why do we have seminaries?

Isn't it arrogant for a person who has little more than a Sunday School education to act as if he knows at least as much about the Bible as one who has painstakingly and at great expense dedicated his LIFE to the study of it?
