Do you mean that player xyz that I once liked - and I no longer like him because he spoke out on an issue that I totally disagree ?

That can be part of it. In my case, I don't take politics into account at all in my enjoyment of sports period - for a single person or a single team, etc. The only time I recall taking such into account was when I was a kid and Cassius Clay refused to be drafted into the military, so I rooted against him. Not sure I would react to him the same way now as a 66-year-old adult.

I do have a problem with team owners that remain silent when players knee for the National Anthem. If they just stand and not put hand over heart - that I can deal with.

Professional athletes like celebrities may not be the sharpest knives in the drawer. Like others above, I try to turn a blind eye toward the political statements of those who have been duped by the Left.
