After a secretive vote within the Conference of Cardinals earlier this month, Jorge Cardinal Bergoglio of Argentina was hailed as the first Latino pope. However, recently a number of Latinos worldwide have questioned: Can Pope Francis really be considered Latino?

The 76-year-old pontiff was born in Argentina. His native language is also indeed Spanish. However, Pope Francis is the son of Italian immigrants to the South American nation, hence his former last name, Bergoglio. A number of Latinos have debated the true ethnicity of the new pope.

As Argentines go, he's as much a Latino as any other Argie. For many and various reasons, Argentina doesn't have that much of a mestizo population. So, most Argentines are of fairly pure European stock.

Lucy--where are you?

We seem to be muddling the notions of nationality and ethnicity.

In spite of ethic cleansing, we are all connected through a gene pool which dispersed from the slope of Mt. Ararat. The eight souls spared had the gene pool of the original pair: Adam and Eve(some would say: Lucy), certainly (not Adam and Steve).

In Christ, all are the same.

The eternal question: Are we born again? See John 3--Jesus to Nicodemus, a master of religion.

Now what?

Even so, come Lord Jesus.

I still believe that the Italians are the 1st & true Latins....the latin language was spread by the Roman armies. South Americans, if Latins at all are from Roman Conquests of Spain....therefore they should stop using Latin in their naming their race. Italians have more Latin in them than any race in the world.

Would someone please describe what a True Latino might look like?

Homo sapiens can be described in two ways: children of God and children of Satan.

The heavenly gene pool is spiritual and has nothing to do with ethnicity or citizenship.

"You must be born again to enter the Kingdom of God".

The man-made religions have not a clue.

Now what?

Even so, come Lord Jesus.

Check this out: the language of the common people including the Roman military, circa 1st century A.D. was Koine Greek, the language of the New Testament. There may have been more converts than Cornelius.

Why were the original autographs of the NT in Greek, not Latin?

Even so, come Lord Jesus.

In the grand scheme of things why does it matter?

Isn't "race" and variations of that word one of satan's "apples" that peoples love to injest?

Food for thought.............

When those in Christ receive their glorified bodies, will we all have the same DNA sequence? The one God created in Adam? The one modified when He created Eve? The sequence carried by Jesus in his mortal body? Will we have DNA?
