Prayer- Copout?

A guy on my facebook page who is turning away from the God of his youth was vehemently put off by the anti-intellectualism of many Christians who expressed their disdain for the election results.

It is true that they were saying some pretty dumb stuff, in my opinion. He offered some solutions to the problems we face and one Christian lady reprimanded him and in the process said something to the effect of, "The only thing that is going to help this nation is if people called by God's name will humble themselves and pray and turn their faces to God..."

He responded...

Laziest solution ever. Don't actually try to fix anything yourself, just ask God to do it for you.

Do you pray for God to fix your roof when it has a hole in it? If an engineer says he knows what caused the hole, do you tell him it's actually because your family didn't pray enough? If a roofer offers to patch it for you, do you decline because God will provide?

I agree.

I also believe prayer is essential. I believe II Chronicles 7:14.

But I have grown to dislike the oversimplified, super-spiritual and anti-intellectual statements by so many Christians that tend to make us sit in our bunkers and "pray" while we let the world go to hell.

I contend that prayers without a desire to act are nothing more than empty ritual designed to make ourselves feel superior and spiritual.

What do you think?

I wish I could remember who said this, so I could give him credit:

Pray as if everything depends on God; work as if it all depends on me.
