Yeah, they might be covering for others somehow...

In my 3.5 years of active duty actually at my unit, I think I pulled battalion staff duty runner twice. And we were a pretty small battalion.

Could be those just covering Christmas block leave for others. I doubt it’s punitive. Usually extra duty is a form of punishment.

Dude I feel like I pulled SDO at least twice a month. BDE SDO usually wrapped up in there as well. Hated it. Something stupid always seemed to happen on my watch.

During WW2, my father served in the Army Air Corps\Force. He was a sheet metal mechanic. The AAF sent him to China via Africa and India (being AAF he flew). While in India awaiting transport to Kunming, Dad spent some time in a transit camp. The draft brought all types into the service, farm boys like my dad and an assortment of professional gamblers. Suffice to say, for the gamblers standing duty cut into their income. So, they would pay my dad to stand it for them.

Another possibility, they're doing it for money.
