Gore won the popular vote which means more people liked him for president. Alas, we have an electoral college to decide these things.

Not exactly according to the poll.

In the new likability survey, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice ranked fourth with 56.1, followed by former Democratic President Bill Clinton, 55.8, and Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, who won re-election this month as an independent after losing the Democratic primary, 52.7.

Bush finished 15th with 43.8, behind former Vice President Al Gore, who was 14th with 44.9.

Popular vote, electoral college, supreme court. All parts of a process that continues to work. There are glitches in each one of those cogs, but together they give us an elected official, no matter who didn't want him.

Trust me, I've lived through more than one national election where the popularly voted candidate did not occupy the office. And, the situation was foreseen, accounted for and will recur.

The Popularity Poll result for Bush?

Bush finished 15th with 43.8, behind former Vice President Al Gore, who was 14th with 44.9.

Slightly less charismatic than Al Gore!!? That's worse than:

Slightly less ethical than O.J. Simpson
Slightly less sane than Ann Coulter
Slightly less chaste than Bill Clinton
Slightly less honest than (insert almost any GOP congressman)
Slightly less humane than Al Qaeda...

That's why polls like this are worse than useless.

Although, he did a great job this post, do you mean: "Slightly less accurate than a Galatian . . . ?"

    ;)

It seems to me that Presidents are always more popular after they leave office. I would wager that Clinton's rank would have been quite a bit lower during his presidency. I also think that Bush's will be higher after he's been out for several years.

Kerry's would be higher if he had a personality and would stop shooting himself in the foot with his mouth.

I am surprised that Lieberman's is not higher.

Why are they useless? Is it because they don't support your ideas?

I don't see any ideas involved here, Terry.

Just a bad poll with stupid questions and faulty results about things that don't matter in the first place.

It's just a measure of how much people like various politicians. In general, things do change after presidents leave office. Popular ones tend to have less approval over time, and bad ones tend to be less disliked. Clinton is the one exception: He was very well-liked in his second term, but he has actually gained a bit in approval rating.

My guess is that the public will find Bush to be somewhat more likeable when he's out of office.

Perhaps "slightly less ethical than El_Guero" ;)

    Sorry, Ken: missed this one.
Yes, we did: U.S. Grant is one who was much worse than Carter. Nixon was worse than Carter. Warren G. Harding was worse than Carter.

    Regards to you,
    BiR

P.S. I didn't know that Bear Bryant was from Fordyce.....
