A recent thread on evangelism caused me to think about the practice of making a claim or accusation about/against a person or group without providing a convincing reference or citation. Often times these claims/accusations are made in order to point out a negative aspect of a position. But without a convincing proof such claims/accusations are not just poor scholarship, they strike close to the mark of making a false claim about another person and thereby violating the 9th commandment (bearing false witness). It would be better to remain silent than to make an unsubstantiated claim/accusation.
