Qualifications for Bible Translators?

    All of the Above except added maybe true the quote was "ONE" and not book. If you are sincere about traslating the bible then use a copy that is trust worthy and passes the test every time. If your not 100% sure you just might be a Christian Atheist. You are not letting GOD be GOD in your life. Thanx and God Bless

    All good points John.

    Various Greek manuscripts have "illuminations" in the text where scribes felt the need to clarify and perhaps correct the copy that they were presented to transcribe.

    Today we call these clarifications or illuminations, corruptions, they are deviations from the original text.

    Sure, a translator will carry bias with him, the better the translator, the less bias and the closer we get to the original text.

    If you want interpretation of meaning, then get a commentary or provide notes with your translation.

    Amen, Rob. And this brings up something. As some have said on this thead, just about anyone with a little language ability can translate if he or she wants to. However, I want to say that the translator should have good character.

    Honesty is a primary character trait for a translator, even a secular one. As you said, "the better the translator, the less bias and the closer we get to the original text." This means the translator must be honest with the text. That is, he must realize that he has no right to do anything but translate exactly what the original says.

    Imagine someone doing a simultaneous interpretation of President George Bush's words to Japanese PM Koizumi. Any personal bias at all inserted into the interpretation may cause a rift between the two countries. The interpreter must translate exactly what George Bush says! A Bible translator should approach the original text with the exact same seriousness and honesty. [​IMG]
