I saw a commercial for a new t.v. show called "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" where 5 homosexuals take a 'straight' guy and do a makeover on his hair, clothes, etc. to make him more attractive.

Five gay men, out to make over the world — one straight guy at time.

They are the Fab Five: an elite team of gay men who have dedicated their lives to extolling the simple virtues of style, taste and class. Each week their mission is to transform a style-deficient and culture-deprived straight man from drab to fab in each of their respective categories: fashion, food and wine, interior design, grooming and culture.

The pampering, however, is just the calm before the storm that is Hurricane Carson. He meets me outside Scoop (a spendaholic's paradise I've never heard of) dressed in a buckskin-style shirt with flappy leather wristbands. Asking me whether I want to be called Pumpkin or Peaches (and then randomly settling on "Chauncey") he declares that I'm "like a frightened bunny, scared and alone in a world of couture." He makes me try a few looks, but recognizing my penchant for casual and slightly sloppy, he decides I do best in my own black blazer, a beige button-down Helmut Lang shirt, some dark-rinse Levi's and a pair of flip-flops — which he says will set me apart from "any other jackass." (This from a man who's outfitted like an extra from "Dances with Wolves.") To my Lutheran-bred mind, Jesus was the only man who could get away with wearing sandals, but Carson is insistent, and so I exit the store, fully styled, and flipping and flopping my way home.

That's because 5 "normal" guys would be mean.

Sounds like a sexual stereotype to me. And you're assuming, apparently, that the five homosexuals that they don't have "mean" intentions in trying to "correct" the normal guy. Once again a liberal assumes the purest of motives for his victim group, the worst for the general population.

And if you read my post, I said what the reaction would be if the normal guys sought to "correct" the homosexual in the areas mentioned. Are you arguing that there would be outrage because the normal guys would be mean or due to the fact they would be trying to correct the queer, apart from any inferred motives?

Could you IMAGINE the uproar if someone advertised a "Straight Guys Helping Gays".

Lots of 'groups' have names that only they can get away with because of political correctness. I could name some here.......

Tsk, Tsk... Well for starters, I would have entitled the show something that wouldn't have been offensive to such a large portion of people!

The traditional way of straight guys to straighten out a homosexual is to beat him with lead pipes. Fun to watch ofcourse, but not ideal for the target audiance the marketeers had in mind when they came up with this.

Well, I don't know "what offense, what outrage" there'd be, but thinking about it - they sure would put a crimp in the gay guy's lifestyle. From what I hear, Al Bundy is not exactly a hot item on the gay circuit.

It seems a weird sort of voyeurism, not really my cup of tea.

Oh man!!

This is nothing more than a take off on the premise of taking a slob and giving him a makeover. Except, in this case, they're attempting to capitalize on the sociological stereotype of gay men having more fashion sense than straight men. Since I don't enjoy programs of this genre, I'll propably pass it by.

Personally, I think the use of the word "queer" in such a manner is derogitory (regardless of one's orientation), hence, I don't care for the title.

Besides, the fashion stereotype is a myth. Gay men don't have a better fashion sense. They do, however, make better hair stylists.

Yep Johnv, the title is not very nice sounding. I think they could have come up with something nicer! Plus, I don't know about the rest of you but my youngest has never heard the word 'queer' used except to mean odd or strange. His reading books will say things like "Will came back in the room with a queer look on his face. Mother wondered what had been said...."

Queer is a word that is being reclaimed by the gay population. Their motive behind it is the same as the African-American's use of the "n-word." The show is marketed to the gay population, as I've read. It's similar, in that regard, to the Showtime show "Queer as Folk."

Here's a quick story, while we are on words. In 1983, I was a kindergartener. On the bus, a high schooler asked me if I was "gay." The only way I knew the word "gay" was from my piano book, which contained the words "Happy and gay" (It was my mother's old piano book.) I told him, "I'm gay most of the time." He and his friends laughed. The bus driver scolded me, telling me never to say that again. I didn't find out the meaning behind "gay" until several years later.

Sorry, but I won't use the n- word in the manner described, and I won't use the qu- word in the manner described. Just because some folks in some communities think it's okay to "claim" them, doesn't make it acceptble in all circles of communication.

I also refuse to refer to the English as "limeys", Chinese as "chinks", and Germans as "krauts", or noncultural black men & women as "uncle toms". These are all derogatory terms, and since my words are supposed to reflect my heart, which is supposed to be filled with the Holy Spirit, I will choose to refrain from using such language.

Just watched the first episode...actually, it is quite funny and entertaining. Don't know if I can take many episodes tho.

The other show they advertised is "Boy Meets Boy", a gay dating show where one guy is set up with 15 others to choose from. The twist...what he doesn't know is some of them are straight.

That one sounds crazier than the QEFTSG show.

I was channel surfing last night after the All Star Angels game (oops, did I say that??). To my surprise, I found the same thing you did. It was quite funny. It wasn't really about "gay" at all, it just seemed to take advantage of the stereotype, as I said earlier. But the show wasn't overly interesting, and I probably don't cath too many episodes int he future.

Oh, now that's just plain cruel, no matter which way one swings. I don't like shows whose goal requires the expense of peoples' feelings. I'll be avoiding that one.
