I think some women in church choose to wear their worldly dresses over clothing based on biblical standards of modesty like pants.

no where in the bible does it say to wear pants or dresses...
so how can you say that a dress is worldly or not. or that pants are less worldly then dresses.

    le bel,

I live in one of the colder climates and have the same conviction that you do. My best advice for you is to try Thrift stores, as they usually have jean dresses and play dresses that the retail stores do not always have. Also, we allow our girls to wear sweats under their skirts when it is very cold, but Virginia is not nearly as cold as it is here in Milwaukee, and our kids do just fine.

Living in So. Cal....which I also have done....you might not be able to find many winter type clothing no matter where you go. It might be that you will have to purchase a few things for her when you get to Virginia. Like I said though, Virginia is not as cold as you might be thinking.

Your Dad is right in that there is no need for you to compromise your convictions. I don't know that it was necessary for you to bring it up to him.... [IMG] ....but thats behind us now.

Remember too, you probably will not be having your daughter walking around outside for hours on end while you are in Virginia. Layer her clothing, get her a good coat, and a pair of sweats under her skirt ought to keep her plenty warm.

    gekko,

she has a conviction.....and those of us with this conviction deserve more than to be lauged at and mocked by those of you who do not agree.

    Also,

to ANYONE else, I believe it is absolutely wrong to try and talk someone else out of their conscientiously held conviction, when it does not conflict with Scripture. My conscience is not anyone else's business, nor is it your job to try and talk us out of what we feel is best and right for us and our family.

Instead of trying to get her to "see the errors of her ways" why not try to give her some solutions that will fit within her convictions? Or are you all so unable to meet people where they are, and accept them, and let them have a conviction which you do not hold to?

You STILL have a lot of baggage, ma'am, if you look at dresses as "spiritual" and slacks as "worldly".

There is NOT ONE VERSE OF SCRIPTURE to support such. If Dad pulls of the hackneyed Deut 22:5, go thru the chapter and find out if HE is obeying the whole list. What a laugh!!

YOU must be convinced what you are doing (wearing, your daughter's attire, etc) meets the BIBLE standard of modesty and appropriateness. And yes, in winter outside of California/Florida, leggings, tights, slacks, etc make intelligent sense.
</font>[/QUOTE]Uh, good thing huh? Especially since there would be many dead children lying in the streets? But now explain modesty in slacks for women 200 years ago? Not. Only prostitutes wore such garb. Modernists don't understand modesty, only they accept worldliness according to modern customs.

Yet another lie by legalist pharisees. Female equestrians wore pants long before 200 years ago.

I challenge anyone who makes such a ridiculus claim to explain modesty in slacks for men 2000 years ago. In order for such an argument as this to hold water, we men should all be wearing kilts.
It is the legalist who doesn't understand modesty, choosing to infuse a manmade doctrine forbidding the wearing of pants by women, rather than searching the scriptures in detain to discover that not a single verse forbids the wearing of pants by women, of men, for that matter.

In fact, the "worldliness" that legalists wield to denounce pants on women is the same "worldliness" that decided dresses are for women and not men.

Well, without reading all the replies, I'll post mine. The Bible tells women not to wear men's clothing. I don't know about you, but if I were to wear pants that my wife wears, I would look rather effeminate. Not only that, but when it comes to my ancestors, the men wore kilts. What standard do you use?

I personally have no problem with women wearing women's pants.

On the other hand, some dear friends of mine, permit their daughters to wear pands underneath their skirts so they can wear dresses/skirts and still play football, etc.

Who is raising your child? I always thought that the husband and wife are to be one not three.
Your dad will get over it. If he doesn't just let him stew. If he wants to make an issue of it refuse to discuss it with him. It is hard for someone to continually talk without a response.

Tell your dad if he wants to get real biblical, then he must wear a cloak. Certainly pants were not worn in the Bible.

Apparently you have never been on the top of a hay pile working as many women did years ago.

So you wear pants under a dress! What kind of conviction is that about wearing dresses? If you believe pants are only for men then you are wearing both men's and women's clothes.

My grandmother who was 97 when she died last year and told me she was quite glad when women could wear pants. She used to wear granny shoes with a heal on them and dresses and worked out in the barn. At that time it was an issue of dresses and shoes. Your ankles could not show. That was considered immodest.

    gb,

like I said, why is it ok for you to mock and deride MY conviction AGAINST it, but of course Id be called a legalist if I dared to make such a comment directed towards one of YOUR convictions which I might not agree with?

Goody for your grandma, btw. Why does it matter to me?

YOu all get so worked up when one of us says we dont wear pants.....why not just accept it and move on? And pants more modest than dresses??!! What kind of dresses are you thinking of, PastorSBC?
The dresses IM wearing are not immodest, thank you. [IMG] Nor could they be considered immodest compared to pants.

And gb....not that its any of your business what I wear under my dress, but no one can SEE them....they are UNDERneath....not on the outside. Part of the issue with pants for me, is to keep myself from blurring that line between male and female. I choose to look like a lady. Why can't you let me, and do so without judging me so harshly?

le bel asked if it was possible to live in a cold climate and still only wear dresses. It IS indeed very possible. Thousands of us do it every year without all dying of pneumonia. That was her question, and I believe it was answered sufficiently within the bounds of her own convictions.

Why is is everytime this issue comes up here we have Christians fighting with each other?

I am sure only one being is happy when this kind of issue turns into a fight.

Hiya bapmom! It sure IS possible to wear dresses and still do everything, as well as keep warm. When we stand out in freezing weather (open-air preaching), I have on a long thick skirt (lined), with socks and thermals underneath. I never feel the cold. I layer my top. I wear gloves and earmuffs; others wear hats.

Some of the Indiana ladies wear quilted skirts and I've even tho't of cutting up a cute blankie to use, with a flannel lining. None of my female kith and kin ever wore britches and managed just fine with their farm chores.
