i do believe that a man who has been married before his calling to preach is still qualified and i believe that single men are also, but they should be very careful in their dating relationships, as we all should. i myself was called to preach as a single man and now i have a lovely Christian wife who stands behind me. but my view on being a pastor is somewhat different. i do not believe that a man who has ever had more than one wife is qualified to pastor. a Fundamental Baptist Ordination commitee will not even ordain a man who has been married more than once. also, you must be married, to your first wife, to pastor. how would it look to see your pastor dating?

Kelly, you are correct that Paul is not making a distinction. usually when this happens in the Bible it is meant in a general sense when no distinction is made. so i would the rules apply outside as well as inside. but please do share the Gospel with everyone. [IMG]

LOL, Nathan.

Just trying to get a general picture here of other people's understanding of the further application of Paul's teachings on this subject.

Since you asked . . .
Honestly? If he was dating in a purposeful manner, it wouldn't bother me at all. In fact, the long-time pastor at my home church began dating a woman about nine months after his wife died, and it was fine. There were some people who thought it was a little improper for him to start pursuing this woman so "soon" after Jane died, but for the most part, people were happy for him, especially when the relationship resulted in a marriage.

This is another subject, isn't it? I believe one wife means one at a time (I am not talking about divorce) and if a pastor or deacon's wife dies, then I believe he may marry again and continue his service to the Lord.

Do I need to look up the scripture and quote it?

I would have no problem with a pastor dating.

Sunday morning a woman in our church stood behind the pulpit >>gasp<< and gave some announcements about events. Others stood on the platform in the worship team and musicians playing instruments.

IF a woman stood behind the pulpit to PREACH, I would be the first person to walk out. No question about it. Leave the women for her to minister to biblically, while not taking the pastoral role or ministering to the whole congregation.

Why do women WANT to pastor a church? Thankful mentioned something about God "calling" a woman to pastor. That should be debated in the Baptist Theology section as I am sure the hair raised on the back of more necks than just mine with that suggestion!

I didn't mean this thread to be a debate on should women preach or not. I only wished not to do anything to dishonor my Lord. I have been asked to speak to the ladies and I wouldn't hold a postion of Pastor and I would be speaking on being a witness to my husband and family. I would be telling how the Lord made me a working vessel he was able to use to get Bill to know Christ. Scripture would be used so I was worried that it might be considered wrong. I'll just pray on it and if the Lord wants me to He will if not it wasn't His will and I don't want anything that is not his will.

Best wishes to you ALL and you all are in my prayers. Jeanne

It is absolutely fine for women to teach other women,in fact, the bible says the older women are to teach the younger women to love their husbands, children, etc. I would encourage you to do that. Women just should not be in authority over men and teach them.

Let me make myself clear. I do not believe that women should preach or be pastors. I don't believe that God calls women to preach or be pastors. I said IF God called a woman to preach ...

Now would someone please answer my question and Living by Faith's question. Where does speaking end and preaching begin when it pertains to a woman?

________________________________________________

We believe that a man is called to ministry and with this the whole duty to preach and teach and minister to the needs of the people. It is the pastor's duty and calling to preach. This is designated, by scripture, as falling upon men and men alone. The pastoral role.

It is not wrong for women to speak at any meeting. We cannot break this down to "no teaching over men". This is an impossibility. Anytime someone, male or female, has something to say, they are teaching something. Whilst women may speak at a worship service, they should never replace the pastoral sermon. Again, this is where I draw the line; usurping the pastoral role.

In this sense the use of the words "preaching" and "speaking" is not a pracice in semantics. They are essential roles. I will even draw the line on so-called lay-preaching when it comes to the pastoral sermon, regardless of gender.

I hope this sheds a little light at least from my perspective.

Cheers,

Jim

Thanful-In 1 Timothy 3 where it says the husband of one wife, the word one is used differently in that verse than in others. If you check the Strong's you will notice that the word one in that verse means first. you must be the husband of your first wife. As far as a widowed pastor getting remarried i really dont know i feel completely.but i would prefer not to remarry if i were a pastor and my wonderful wife left my side to go on home. [IMG]

Actually, this is not true. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. The word means "one." "First" is a possible meaning but by no means is this passage using it that way here.

Thank you, Pastor Larry.
Actually, all people feel this way until their wonderful spouse goes to heaven; they become lonely and God sends another wonderful person into their lives to be their spouse.

Some will remarry and others will not. But never say never. I did, but God had other plans. I'm so very glad He did. [IMG]

Can we come back to something that seems to have been swept under the carpet on this thread. Whatever way we describe the things we do for the Lord, male or female, what is it really if we do not care about the glory of the Lord being revealed within it?

"We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only son, who came from the Father, full of grace AND truth"(John 1 v14)

yours, Jon

Now, here goes nothin'! I'd just a soon hear Sister Beth Moore than any other woman speaker I know--and I don't know but a few! For a man to get up and leave while she is teachin'--is sorta like turnin' your back on Fort Knox! Mind you, she's teachin' and not preachin' nor pastorin'--for some of you more die harders out there!

Agreed Blackbird, I have listened to Beth on the radio and have really been moved by her words. Why is it that we can enjoy her on the radio but not in Church. I bet she was standing behind a pulpit when she recorded the radio spot. I understand the biblical mandate but I interpret it to mean not to assume the role of pastor. It is a tough issue and i don't pretend to be the authority, just my thoughts.
