My former pastor; the message was First Love. It dealt with our walk with the Lord. When we are firstasaved we can't do enough for Him, but if we don't walk with Him we lose the love that motivates us to live for Him

I like most kinds of preaching styles. Our pastor is a teacher (Charles Stanley style) but I was raised up with Preachers (John Hagee style). The sermon I enjoyed the most was from an old fashioned preacher style preacher who preached a sermon "Are you crazy?". I was sitting next to a friend who had parents who thought she was crazy for being so devoted to working for the Lord.
This was about 15 years ago, but I still remember the joy that sermon brought to her.
Yes, she was crazy by the worlds standards and that sermon made her realize that when we serve the Lord with our whole heart, we are going to be considered crazy.
Expressing joy in church, taking unchurched kids to church, spending hours studying for lessons, spending time visiting and witnessing and encouraging, etc... yea, sounds pretty crazy huh?
I won't forget the sermon and the encouragement it gave to my friend. I was encouraged by her joy of accepting the fact that we are 'crazy'.

Not even a preacher - but Atty David Gibbs of Christian Law Assoc. and Accelerated Christian Education Ministries preached Preference or Conviction? many years ago.
It so moved my spirit and mind that I began a critical exodus from legalism, pseudo-fundamentalism (hyles type), and into an open and honest relationship with the Lord.

Best sermon I ever heard was Tony Campolo's now infamous, "The Kingdom of God is a Party" sermon given at Creation '89.
I used to have it on tape and I'd give anything to have now.
A good friend of mine, Mitch Weissman, gave a great sermon called, "When the Holy Spirit Shows up".
I love the eulogy Bobby Richardson gave at Mickey Mantle's funeral.
The Gospel message clear and up front on national TV.

Two of the most convicting sermons that I have ever heard were by John Piper. There are on the audio sermons/key messages section of the www.desiringgod.org website entitled:
Missions Exists Because Worship Doesn't
and
John Piper's Message at One Day 2000
It is hard to narrow it down to one, so if you don't mind I'd like to pick three:
1)Pastor Chris Pledger, "There's Another Generation" it was hot that night
2)Jack Hyles, "The Saddest Story in the Bible" I think that is the name of the sermon.
He preached about Moses dying before going into the Promise Land because of sin.
3)Jeff Owens, "Everybody Has Standards"
not much to say about this one but everyone does have standards, great sermon.

Fred Craddock's "How long does Easter last?", given at FBC Macon, GA the Sunday after Easter 1995.
Chuck Poole's "One last word about.." series that he gave that same year before leaving FBC Macon.
"Shades of the Golden Calf" by a FBC Macon member and Mercer U. education professor (his name is escaping me right now, its from spring 1998-Russ Honeycutt, can you help me on this?).
Edd Rowell's Palm Sunday sermon in his book "Finding God in the rest of the story".

Is that the same Ed Rowell that is working or used to work on staff at Proclaim magazine? Wrote a book about 2 years ago...oh, I forget the title. It's in that new series of pastoral books, brief, has a beige cover...I think the folks at Leadership magazine are behind it....little help?

Yes, FBC Macon has really been blessed. Many of Mercer's faculty are members, and a large number of them are ordained minsters who have a doctorate or two. They also have some big time guests to speak like Dr. Craddock and Keith Parks (who come to think of it, preached another of my favorites there called "Why I am a Baptist"), and Walter "Buddy" Shurden (an FBC member), who I think chairs Mercer's Christianity Department and I think was with Southern Seminary (pre-takeover/reformation).
Edd Rowell is senior editor (and a founder) of Mercer U. Press. He edits and writes religious and historical works for Mercer. He is also my father-in-law.
His book, Finding God in the Rest of the Story was published in 1998(?) by Smyth and Helwys, the moderate alternative to Lifeway. He won Georgia Author of the Year shortly after it was published. "Daddy Edd" wrote hundreds of things for the SBC until... well, I guess you know when. I'm not sure if he wrote for Proclaim but he wrote hundreds of things for the SBC-affiliated groups ,including People magazine back before it became a secular magazine, for many years.
Anyway, I think you'd like the book-I can't think of anything in it that would be to far to the left for you based on your posts. You should try it. Hope all is well with you, Tom.

Best sermon was a series by Chuck Poole in 1997 entitled Honest Theology for Difficult Days. Man I miss him, great Pastor and wonderful friend, not to mention IMHO the finest Preacher out there. (I haven't heard you Tom but I am a Bama fan so I've probably got issues with you other than theology )

Are you talking about Rick Wilson? And yes FBC Macon is a preaching Mecca, the Pastor there now is excellent as well Bob Setzer.

Robert Richardson is the Mercer professor who preached the "Shades of the Golden Calf" sermon at FBC Macon. And you're right, Bob Setzer is also a good preacher-its just hard to look like a giant when you follow Chuck Poole. He's got a hard job, following Chuck and the great guest preachers who have stood in that pulpit-but he does it well.
Macon has ruined me for other churches-how many churches have several world-class preahcers in the congregation (Buddy Shurden, robert Richardson, Edd Rowell, and Co.)in addition to a great one in the pulpit?

I agree with you, it is very embarrasing what we did and we deserve to be severely punished. What is even more embarrasing is the passive aggressive aproach the school and alumni are taking toward the NCAA. We got caught with our hand in the cookie jar and the everyone else does it argument drives me crazy.
I have sat through six of those seven games, don't remind me.
Have you read any of Chuck Pooles books? I'll send you one if you will read it and give me your opinion.
