Reading the bible for the New Year

It's nice to read theology books, however nothing can replace the word. I need to be in the word more and so have been convicted to read the entire OT in one year perhaps 3 chapters a day. I have read the NT in full before so it's the OT I need to read. Anyone read the bible all the way thru? Rippon did I misspell that word?

How do you read the bible? Do you buy a study guide to assist or just use a SB? I only have SB's.

There are some great programs out there that help you to read through the WHOLE Bible in a year and I've done it numerous times. If you have a smartphone where you can download apps (or a tablet or something like that), you can get it set up with the apps.

I think my favorite was reading the Bible chronologically (in time order) so that I could see how everything fit together. This was great for reading Psalms and Samuel together to see just what was going on in David's life when he wrote a particular Psalm.

Every year at this time, we recommend people read about 3 chapters a day to get thur the Bible in one year.

Well, that's great for about 2-3 weeks and then people miss a day here and there, then ...

And then people try to rush thur to catch up/keep up.

In the 4 Gospels there are about 90 chapters. I recommended that folks read 2 chapter a week - and if possible 2-3 times per week.

I would rather have quality then quantity.

But I was taught very early on that a disciple of Christ should know the Bible, both Old and New Testaments.

I don't use the reading through the Bible as my study time. It's more of my reading before bed or first thing in the morning - when I'm able to read and comprehend but not deep study, if you know what I mean. I don't use a study Bible because I'm reading the Word, not the notes when I'm doing this. I do my Bible study time at another time (usually not every day because I don't have time).

I disagree with reading your Bible with reading the study notes. You should read the Bible for what it is - the Bible. Skip the notes and see what God says rather than what man says. I also try to read the Epistles all the way through as is (in some cases, this may take quite some time) because I want to read it as the original audience did - as a letter to them and reading it in it's entirety.

As for the starting to read and getting behind, I have had that happen and the best thing to do is to just move on. If it takes a year and a half rather than a year, that's fine. At least you are reading through the Word. This is where the reading apps are great or else the Read Through the Bible in a Year Bible is really handy. Just move on to the next reading and you're good.

You do know those notes are not inspired right?

My husband and I just finished going through the Bible for his internship. We had to do it in 6 months so we actually listened to 7 chapters a day. I will say going that fast I was able to see threads I had never picked up before. I think this coming year we are going to zoom in on one book probably Ephesians for in depth study. There is value in both the broad overview and in depth study.

Since I am quite a slow reader, recordings of scripture work well for me for familiarization. Often I am surprised at how much I missed, trying to figure out how to pronounce or disconnect when chasing some obscurity. Having said that, after I familiarize myself with a book, then I study it, not usually verse by verse, but passage by passage.

Since being saved in November of 2011 I have read the bible all the way through probably about 3 times, in addition to that I have read certain books numerous times like Ecclesiastes, Philippians, Song of Solomon.

I find it disturbing that some who would appear to be Christians much older than me have never read the bible through all the way at least once.

I use to read between 5 and 10 chapters a day, but I have really slowed down and gone for more quality bible reading over quanity, sometimes I only read 3-4 verses at a time.

I am currently also working on memorizing Song of Solomon, basically I have been reading chapter 1, 5 times a day, this month.next month I will move to chapter 2.
