Sorry, it took me a bit to type this quote up, but TR&TS does not come in e-book form. But, I wanted to give Mr. Verduin's definition of sacral.

Sacral – "By the word 'sacral' which we will be using frequently and which we request the reader to impress on his mind, we mean 'bound together by a common religious loyalty.' By sacral society, we mean society held together by a religion to which all the members of that society are committed"

pp. 22-23, Verduin, Leonard, The Reformers and Their Stepchildren, Baker, 1980.

Leonard Verduin in The Reformers and Their Stepchildren used the word sacralist to denote the church\state relationship.

John Calvin would have had everyone on this thread burned at the stake.

Would Calvin be assisting Ignatius Loyola?

You're over thinking. Let me explain, years ago, I attended a 150th-anniversary celebration of the first Russian to be Biblically baptized held by the local Evangelical Christian Baptists of Metro-Sacramento. One of the speakers was a Russian EC-B historian. He divided Baptists into three schools:
  • Anglo-American- The one most folks think of. Thanks to over 200 years of foreign missionary efforts by Americans and Brits, this school has left its mark all over the world.
  • German- This school directly descends from the Anabaptists. Its influence is primarily focused in Europe. I left this school out due to the aberration of the Muensterites.
  • Slavic- Growing out of the German Baptists who settled in the Volga River Region. Its home ground is the Former Soviet Union.
Catholics (RCC & EOC) aren't\weren't the only state churches around. The Church of England, Reformed (the Germanies and Switzerland), and Lutheran (the Germanies again) all are\were state churches. Remember Cuius regio, eius religio. Remember Baptists fall outside of a sacralist social system.
Slavery, The South? all Catholics now?
