The prodigal son was lost.

That "specific" prodigal son probably never existed.

The point that I glean from the parable is that the Father took him back after his son's fruitless adventures in the way of the world. His Father was his Father prior too, during and after. ...duh.

The son was lost. DUH! READ the text! The parable is not about one son. It is about two and they represent Israel. No one how is born of God practices sin. 1John 3:9

FAL, I am almost of the opinion that you shine so brightly that someone needs to put a tub over your head so the sun can shine in the morning.

I have only run across one other man in my life that knew it all. In fact, this guy knows more than you do when you get right down to it. Can you believe that? It's true.

Me, on the other hand, I'm quite content not knowing it all. You see, my Lord loves me unconditionally. When my flesh sins..., (but not my soul) He still loves me. When my soul sins..., (but not my flesh) He still loves me.

Gods knowledge and mysteries stretch for an eternity. Certainly farther and more encompassing than what He provided for us in His Word. Who can instruct the Lord? Certainly not you, not me, not anyone, all the while some profess to have all things cornered and down to a science. Hey, the Lord created Science. All Sciences..., He did in fact, so how can any of us top Him?

Yes, my salvation is secure. In all reality all I have is His promise. I don't really need to know how a computer works..., all I need it to do is work for me when I hit the power button.

If the Prodigal Son was saved, not saved, a hard core Jew or a worshiper of wooden idols..., I really don't know nor do I care. What applies to me is that if I wander off with the attitude of being smarter than Lassie..., I can still return and come home to the one who loves me once I find myself "hungry".

I think that's a pretty cool situation. No matter how badly I screw up my life I can still return home. So, you continue to figure it all out and impress little 'ole me with your vast knowledge. How that? We will consider this a tie ball game with no overtime.

If I tell you again you still will not believe. Refer to my posts.

That you would think that is unfortunate.

I have reread your posts here again, and unless I've overlooked something, you address the continuance of sin. My question was not about that.

Thank you, as I now better understand your position. Your statement that you don't care about what the bible means in a particular passage by what it says, but you just believe what you believe and that is final. I would agree that such a method of belief is a dead end (final).

Well I can tell you if you read the bible like you read my posts there is no wonder why you are confused. I never used the phrase "continuance of sin." I only used the word that the bible represents and that is "practice" sin No Christian will ever practice sin.
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit (practice) sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot (practice) sin, because he is born of God.

I said I was confused? No, I just don't need to know it all. If I knew it all, why then would there be a need for faith?

You are confused about faith. Faith is not believing in what you are confused about. Faith is acting on what you are positive about (assurance) when that assurance comes from the word of God.

Romans 10:17 So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Hbr. 11:1 Now faith is the [fn]assurance of things [fn]hoped for, the [fn]conviction of things not seen.

It is too bad you have chosen not to care what any part of the word of God means. You become the loser by your own choice and by your own confession do not want to know.
No Christian practices sin. 1 John 3:9

In your own words, in this context, what does the word "practice" mean to you (if it doesn't mean to continue)?

It was not intended to be an insult. I was trying to get you to wake up and stop reading into what is written what is not there.
It is not about what "practice" means to me. It is what it means in regards to the word of God. You can see this in 1 John 3:10
In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not (practice) righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

Rom 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

It has to do with our daily walk. Whom are we on a daily bases yielding to? That is our practice. No child of God daily yields themself or are servants of sin as a practice. It is not our character and we are kept from the practice of sin because of Whom we have yielded ourselves to. His seed which abides in us makes it impossible for a believer to practice sin.

I am not trying to be smart here or put you down. I am simply telling you that the reason you and many are having such a problem with this is because you have been programed to believe that a Christian can backslide into sinning, that no one can keep the commandments, and that we all sin every day. All that is false! The bible teaches that it is impossible for a believer to practice sin 1 John 3:9.

Also you, as I have also, have heard these people get up and testify how they got saved back when and then fell away from God into sinning and now they have re-dedicated their life. That is all false. The truth is they got saved at what they thought was a re-dedication. They were not saved prior. Salvation is not simply a positional change with no experience. We experience a sudden change of no longer being able to practice sinning. We are saved unto good works. Eph 2

It is a narrow gate, and a straight path, not a broad gate and a wavy path as some are trying to promote. A good tree cannot produce (practice) bad fruit.
True conversion changes the person and we do not have two natures. We are left with the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the boastful pride of life, but we are also kept from the practice of sinning. That which we are left with is a remnant and we are given the responsibility to overcome the remnant of the flesh. That means we are seek to stop sinning altogether. As long as we hold we cannot stop we will live in defeat, but no matter what, no one will ever again practice sin again once they are saved.

That is your choice. Many people who claim to be Christians do not believe the bible but instead have their own doctrine.

Whosoever is born of God doth not commit (practice) sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot (practice) sin, because he is born of God.

You keep quoting this verse, without EVER giving to us the answer to what it actual means!

What does it mean to practice sin ?

You have to take into account the contex, Greek text and grammer, and also taking into account entire Bible!

true Christians do commit real sins even after being saved by God, that is aagainst Will of God and their new natures, but can and do still commit sin, and at times maybe even a season of sinning!

remember man Paul addressed who had sexual relations with step mom?
From both Greek and contex, man was a christian in gross sin, paul placed him under chaistasment/judgement, but in his second letter to Corinth, admonished them to receive Him back again, as he evidently 'came to his senses!"

Was he practicing sin?

I have answered, you either are not reading the posts or you are rejecting what is stated.

JesusFan, it does appear to me that using the word "practice" as it's applied here is a result of "Scripture Religion".

Every morning when I wake up I consume several cups of coffee. As I like coffee in the morning it has become a hobby? A habit? A practice? I drink coffee every morning. End of subject.

As a Believer in the Lord Jesus I still find it most easy to sin. Sometimes it just happens with no warning. I'm not looking to "Look Twice" it just happens. Am I "practicing" sin? Not in my mind I'm not. Maybe that second look is a habit? A natural happening.

I am of the opinion however that should I go out of my way to sin..., the spirit is not in me to begin with. I am also of the opinion that a Believer can backslide. Why not? How else then could we possibly grieve the Spirit?

Way too many people want to make a mountain out of a mole hill. My Lord loves me unconditionally. He will always take me back if I'm willing to come back. I create my own burdens. The Lord does not create them for me.

With much of the reasoning posted regarding this thread it's a wonder anyone ever got to Heaven.

Many will not. :tear: Also if anyone holds to the false teaching of backsliding, which is not even mentioned in the NT, they cannot believe 1 John 3:9. It is always a choice of who we will believe. satan or God.

Backsliding is indeed in the Bible, at least the concept, as that refers to what happens to a child of God that refuses to deal with their personal sins by confession/repentance of tjhem to the Lord!

failure to address their sin problem areas will cause them to breal their fellowship with the Heavenly Father!

See King david for how that time outside will of God and fellowship felt for him!

First that is the OT. Second it is a nation not an individual. Third the term means lost in the context, not saved and practicing sin.
The OT is the only place the term backsliding is used and it always refers to the Nation Israel, never an individual. There is one passage when the term is used in the OT speaking to or about an individual but the individual is a symbol of the nation Israel. No believer has even been called a backslider by the word of God because the word always means to be lost.
No Christian can backslide. No believer will ever practice sin 1 John 3:9.
The teaching that a Christian can backslide is man’s false teaching not God’s truth as God keeps us from the practice of sinning if we are saved.

As usual you did not read my post. I can see clearly why you are so confused about the word of God since you must certainly treat it the same way.

The problem here is that you and I read same Bible, but you fail to see that it teaches repentence/confession, loss of fellowship in a believers life, and that Christians STILl have a sin nature to deal with!

You must have a bible of your own making.
