You know Principals and teachers have a tough job. One of them is to keep parents happy. Even though we do not like to admit it, there may be parents who object to their children being witnessed to at school.

you are right that religious education (not neccessarily Christian ) must be taught in British schools. The balance on this is that it is the only subject that parents have the right to withdraw the children if they wish.

Would that balance not help to ease the concerns being expressed here by those in America.

    just a thought

    yours, Jon.

If that were done like that I would't have a problem with it, and It seems to me to be within the spirit of what our founding fathers wanted in the constitution. What I don't know is if it would follow the rules that are now in place thanks to 200 years of Supreme Court Opinions.

There are so many who are intollerant of others. It's funny how many minorities, christians included, feel that since they have been persecutaed then only their point of view should be heard. Please do not misunderstand what I am saying here. I belive the Gospel of Jesus Christ to be the one and true Word of God. I also belive in freedom of religion. I equate freedom of religion in America to God giving us a choice of weather or not we accept Him. If God won't impose his will upon us in this area then my goverment should not either.

had aninteresting experience on one trip to states. There preaching in churches, but amongst other activities would be visuiting schools on a cultural ticket.
Most areas the host made arrangement direct with schools. In one area, however, they went through the Director of Education who wanted to know what I would do.

As an opener I asked if it was appropriate by way of intro to say that I would be speaking about Scotland where I work as one showing Gods love answer ? ........no!

Fine. I proceded to show things and pictures of scotland I would use which impressed educationally. Then, I said here is a picture of a round church which has an interesting legend, but dont suppose I could talk about that. She took the bait and asked what I meant.

Well the legend says it was built round so there is no corners for the devil to hide in. However, inside the pews are all squared of, so the corners are where the people are.

Her ansqwer?..........yes, you can talk about that, along with the devil, but dont mention Gods love.

    yours, Jon.

No, Jon, a negative option on religious education would not satisfy the requirement for separation.

And I am skeptical of the practical benefits of any such instruction, which would have to be so broad to meet the demands of Baptists, Methodists, Anglicans, Roman Catholics, Orthodox, Penecostals, Mennonites, Word of Faith, Christians Scientists, Mormons, Presbyterians, etc. that it wouldn't amount to much, I'm afraid.

Just imagine what course of instruction could possibly please just the Baptists on this board ...

Most schools accomplish tons when they get the history and math correct and some of you want them take on teaching religion! You are a brave group.

As parents, we are responsible for our children's education. How that education is done, however, is up to certain circumstances in each parent's situation.

I have found the public schools that my daughters attend to be very, very adequate. They have been taught by dedicated, competent teachers who do an outstanding job in teaching the basics to my daughters. But at the same time, I watch my daughter's education and their schoolwork like a hawk. The only time I ever had to object to what they were learning was when my elder daughter's 5th grade teacher was pushing a story series that gave a message that vegetarianism was better than eating meat. The teacher stopped the lesson for my daughter, with no problem.

As for religion, my daughters and their classmates have never had a problem here at all. The only thing the school did was discontinue the annual "Holiday" concert because some weirdo parent complained to the ACLU that the school actually mentioned "Jesus" in a song about his birth. Horrors!
