Religious Discrimination

Has anyone ever experienced this and what did you think? I was in a interview recently and the interviewer asked me what I liked and did not like about my last job and I was directly honest and said I did not like certain associates cussing and yelling at me, and she interrupted and said that her work environment is one where people like to cuss, yell, etc.. She said if I did not like it then I needed to tell her right know. I replied and said that I never quit my last job, but since she asked I was trying to be honest. Some employers ask a question because they are following a script, not because they are interested in the candidate.

I mentioned that I am a man of faith and that I do not try and cuss, but I am not going to quit over it, its just that I do not like it.

On my current resume (and when directly asked) I make no secret of the fact that I am a born-again Christian as I believe it is better to be honest up-front about that. I'm not a "stealth" believer either in my professional or my personal life. I'm relatively sure that my forthrightness about this part of my life has probably cost me from being considered for some jobs but I'd rather suffer that now than be fired for it later. I know that in this culture and work environment that may limit some of the opportunities that are extended to me in the secular world but it is my prayer that God would open to me that particular door or "career path" that He wants me to pursue. My spiritual life is NOW the chief pursuit and point of my existence so it is my intention that whatever I do be done "out in the open" for all to see. In this world that may well cost us something in terms of "reward" or recognition but our existence here is relatively short in light of eternity. If I work for someone here...they will know what I am from the beginning. The challenge is.....living UP to what you say you are.

Thanks for your encouragement brother Greg. I am also sorry to hear of your job troubles. Greenville SC is a tight market with not many jobs. Its the Bible belt and there are churches on every corner. You may want to try one of the warehouses in the area Greg for there are lots of them. I appreciate that you put God first and that you are standing for the truth. Praise the Lord for people like you brother Greg.

I just don't get it. Why should being a Christian prevent you from working where you "might" get cussed it? The first century Christians were not such wall-flowers!

Those are the places we should run to with His light!! I rejoice in the fact that I can work on a college campus with people who might cuss at me and call me names because that is my mission field. I don't have to go out on the street to preach because I have the opportunity to do it every day with my life - I am surrounded by people who do not love Christ and what better place to be?

I don't have a problem with it. Just curious as to why it would come up as most religion questions are legally out of bounds during an interview.

People tend to know that I'm a Christian based upon my answers to certain questions. I will work something in about Sunday School,Church or dealing with the kids at church. And a lot of times they respond in kind or we just keep moving.

When you just casually talk about your faith as opposed to presenting it as a line in the sand where you're not going to tolerate certain things, it seems to make for better dialog instead of confrontation.:flower:

For me its Shipping/Logistics/Light Industrial, etc.. They are usually all one in the same just different names. In the warehouse world some warehouses are very vulgar, etc while others are more professional.

But then again today I had a interview on the 7th floor of a building for a job working in IT or as Billing Clerk and I told her that I could not work on sundays because I am a believer, and she did not have an issue with it. The interviewer was very professional...

I told that interviewer that I would not and have never quit at a job where they cussed me out and mistreated me. I just did not like it because of the unprofessionalism. But then again perhaps I made a mistake in quitting the beer factory, or did I? That was a dark place with vulgar talk, sex music, alcohol, a hate towards Christians, etc.. Although the people they hated the most were Catholics and Midonites and I shared their concern.

Ev6589- Please do not take this the wrong way. If what you stated is true, you basically told the interviewer that you do not get along well with others. Not sure it sounds like an issue of religion as you described the interview.

View it from the interviewer's position: if you're interviewing people for a job, and one of them tells you he didn't like his last job because all they ever talked about was God and Jesus stuff, and that's the kind of crew you currently have working for you ... what's your likelihood of hiring that person?

To weed out those who put "personal issues" ahead of the task they were assigned to do at their former employer.

"Bad mouth" people at a previous job is a good indicator that the same behaviour will be displayed at the new job.

It's a good interview technique to discern who puts the company's objectives first and those who put themselves first. You are hired to meet the needs of the company. Secondly, it's a good way to discern the ethics of the potential hire.

Exactly what old timer said. Remember: they're hiring someone who will be a representative of their company. They want to know if you'll be a positive representation, or a negative one.

The next time I get ask those kind of questions I am gonna just be broad and generic rather than get specific. I had a interview for a good paying job yesterday and they never once asked that question. However I have had others that did.

One asked me all about how I dealt with negative employees and they wanted specifics and such and I only tried to be honest. Being honest is not bad mouthing anyone, but I guess in todays day of Tolerance and relativism saying anything bad about someone, even if asked and even if the truth is spoken I will get accused of "bad mouthing." Reading books on Tolerance this is EXACTLY how it is.

So yes thanks for the tips. Not going into details would probably be a better idea. However some posters on this board will do whatever they can to criticize me as that is their goal. So even saying this they will find fault.

It also may be a way to practice religious discrimination under the table and call it something else. Its okay as I have gotten plenty of other interviews that never asked that question and those types of questions.

Criticism is good no matter where it comes from - it's not the criticism, it's how you take it, that counts.
