How true. How true.Civil Rights Leader Calls For 'KKK' Byrd Probe
The head of the California-based civil rights organization, the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny (BOND), called Tuesday for a formal investigation into Sen. Robert Byrd's involvement with the notorious anti-black hate group, the Ku Klux Klan.
"Congress should investigate Sen. Byrd and his relationship with the Klan," said Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, in reaction to statements from Byrd's press secretary Tom Gavin yesterday in an interview with NewsMax.com.
Of particular concern to the BOND chief was Gavin's revelation that Sen. Byrd continues to maintain that he didn't harbor racist views at the time he was full-fledged Klan member.
Between 1882 and 1968, there were 48 lynchings in Byrd's home state of West Virginia, according to statistics compiled by the NAACP.
"I believe that if Sen. Byrd was a Republican with this type of history the Congressional Black Caucus and the NAACP would be insisting that Sen. Byrd explain his actions," complained Peterson, before adding, "and they would demand that he step down."
