I'm sure it would be offensive.

But if you brought a 1611 KJV Bible, you have met their standard. And you might get to make a point that can free people from the idolatry of the KJVO movement.

Jesus very intentionally offended the religious sensibilities of many of His hearers because it was more important that they be shown truth than that they remain happy and ignorant. (Think about healing on the Sabbath or turning over the tables in the temple!) Living up to the letter of their rules yet showing the depravity of their rules may be the most appropriate stance.

They've made the version of the Bible the issue... But of course, I doubt I would ever use their curriculum, so I probably won't have to make that decision.

Peter Ruckman's hobby horse is the KJV as you all know and he could care less about women wearing pants.

If you go to a monastry you should expect to observe their silence rules...just a thought.

I don't agree at all with their requirements nor their particular brand of theology...but if I have to go to their house I should respect their rules. (Personally I'd never step foot anywhere near the land of pink and blue sidewalks.) So long as they don't say that I have to wear a dress or skirt when I teach their curriculum..oh wait, I mean a shirt and tie (got confused again)...I don't care...but then again I wouldn't ever consider using their curriculum.

If you're going to their house for the conference make sure you stay off campus so you can go out and chill on a) the beach and b) the town in your civis :D

btw, Ive been thinking about this, and since Im of the same standard as PCC (though perhaps not the same stringency about it), I wanted to be clear.....at least to TaterTot.

I so appreciate the fact that you are willing to go and comply with the standard although it is not the same as your own. In my opinion, this fact speaks of your love for your fellow Christians and your willingness to not be an offense or a stumblingblock. Im not affiliated with PCC, I really don't know anyone who went there either, so maybe Im not in their circle as much as you might think.....but I believe your attitude would be greatly appreciated there, even though you disagree with the standard.

    :)

I used to work for a private school (one that was decidedly and explicitly non religiously-affiliated) and I know what you mean. The school doesn't want to offended anyone because it is bad for the marketing efforts, so it restricts everyone according to the demands of the most legalistic group and the largest donors. In our case, the most legalistic group was the "tolerance" group, that was very intolerant of any philosophy or position that could possibly offend someone or demonstrate that certain moral, ethical or religious systems might be more truthful than competing systems. Along with my primary duties, I had to deal with disciplinary issues and some of our meetings with students, administrators, attorneys (yes, some students had attorneys available to threaten us), and faculty members were comedic in their stupidity.

You know, you are right. The ones that create the most stink have the loudest voice.

I was a client (AKA: 'student') at a major University.
    I had to park off-campus.
I had to walk through a full student (AKA: client) parking
    lot I couldn't afford.
    I had to walk through a half-full faculty/staff/employee
    parking lot.

That is the way universities (and colleges), they are built
and run for the comfort, convienence of the
    people that work there.

However, the laugh is on them.
The workers get paid about 18,000$ a year LESS
than I did for a similar job in INDUSTRY.
That is some $60 a day they have to pay for their
    neat parking.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Since that is where the conference is and that is what the rule is, I would do it. I would pray like old camel knees for happiness and generousity of spirit while I did it because I am rebelous by nature . . .

There are lots of other things I could throw in at this point since I teach at a Christian school and am familiar with ABeka, but the fact of the matter is that they aren't germaine to the question and that you'll be in a skirt and totin' a KJV ;)

Could it be they get that kind of treatment because of the dollars they bring? Someone who is so afraid of offending stands for nothing. My Bible states in Prov. 28:1, "The wicked flee when no one is pursuing, but the righteous are bold as a lion."

Often people who are very insecure are also the same people who feel a need for many rules because it gives them boundaries and a sense of right and wrong. Some of the people who are drawn to those groups are people who have not established boundaries and have gotten into trouble. It gives them a sense of security. Seldom do those people know what it is like to live under grace and lunder the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

I have personally seen people in a church who were controlled by a pastor who was very rigid. However a lot of the people in that church were into drugs earlier and had no boundaries in their life.

I suppose the old adage that begins with, "When in Rome...." applies here too, except I suppose it would probably go something like:

"When thou art in PCC, thou shalt do as PCC requireth thee to do!" :BangHead:  :wavey:

While no fan of PCC, my daughter is a graduate. I do not recommend the school personally for several reasons.

However - when I was on campus there were plenty of people who did not fit their student dress code. They do not turn campus visitors away for not being dressed according to their code.

I know they are KJVO (but not to the Ruckman extreme), but am surprised to learn that they will not let you bring any other version to a teachers conference. Are they going to take it away from you if you bring one?

C4K -- Do you suppose that maybe they have MV scanners at all the entrances to the PCC campus and/or its buildings that are programmed to detect the presence (even in one's luggage) of an NIV or NKJV or [perish the thought!] maybe even a Geneva Bible?

Perhaps PCC has some kind of program that trains students to become future airport security personnel whose student internship involves manning these MV scanners throughout the campus.

(How's that for starting a good rumor???   )

Would you feel the same way if you were the one required to go and were told you must wear pants and bring a NRSV or TNIV Bible and use it exclusively during your stay?

Yes, I absolutely would still feel the same way. The conference isn't about whether or not I agree with their policy on that issue. Now, whether I'd still go to a conference that would require me to wear pants is a whole other subject. I'd lose my job rather than be forced to wear pants in public at a conference because I believe that this is a modesty issue - but I would not bring up what I consider to be "error" in public at their conference.

Now, I daresay that TaterTot also would not compromise her standards in order to attend this conference - they are not asking her to do something which would offend her, they are asking her to refrain from something which she believes is within her Christian liberty. I also have issues that would fall under that category. For example, I would comply if they said we are not going to eat meat this whole week - we are going to be vegetarians during the conference. I might really crave a Big Mac, but I'd go along with their conference rules for the sake of peace.

    lol

Truth be told, I would probably weardressy clothes at a conference anyway. I will go and I will get what I can from the event. I just dislike being made to feel sub-spiritual because of my choice of clothing and Bible translation. I wont make an issue out of it at all. I just wanted to get your thoughts. Glad to hear from folks on both sides of the issue, thats what I was hoping for.

I know it's hard anticipating being around those who might make you feel like that. I bet when you get there you'll see that many many of them aren't going to be like that at all. It won't even be on their mind what you might wear at home or what you might read at home. And I bet most of them really wouldn't think of you as sub-spiritual at all, even if they really did know everything....lol

    :)

I hope you have a grand time! Oh, btw, I don't remember if you said, but when is this conference?

    Its not until July.

I have nothing against those who have those stipulations on their ownlives, please dont misunderstand. But as you stated, and I liked how you put it, as part of my Christian liberty, I do not feel bound to those same strict regulations. My heart is clear before the Lord regarding those issues, as I am sure yours is. Thanks for a friendly dialog on a topic that has caused much friction in the past :)
