24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;
25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. Genesis 19:24-26

Beginning with Lot's wife's monument overlooking the Dead Sea. In researching this thread it appears the area has become a tourist attraction touting health benefits by going there.

Wonderfully interesting video notes - Which starts out...

Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.- Ezekiel 16:48-50

Entire city - is now covered with an white ash.
Swirly designs - called themal ionization occuring when the temp goes above 6,000* F.
Elephant Statute - Similar to the Hindu Elephant God Ganesha?
White powder everywhere - Calcium Sulfate (CaSO4) - Created when heat goes above 500*F
Yellow powder everywhere - Sulfur (Brimstone)
White Sulfur - Can only be found in the ruins of Sodom and Gommorah
Brimstone - Used in the modern manufacturing of matches and gunpowder. Sulfur is associated with divine punishment by fire (Gen 19:24; Rev 14:10). The reaction with air produces a deadly sulfur dioxide (SO2)
Ziggurats (to protrude) - First occurs as the Tower of Babel which is mentioned after the time of Noah and also present in this story.
Sphynx and Pyramids - With Egyptian type designs.
Quoting Luke 17:28-29 - Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.
Quoting 2 Peter 2:6 - And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly

Brimstone is sulfur and throughout Sodom and Gomorrah is found embedded in the ground. It is highly flammable, easily ignited, and there is only one area on earth where sulfur stones are found... Sodom and Gomorrah... And at 96% purity! Sulfur found elsewhere on earth rarely exceeds 40% purity. Brimstone burning blue indicates intense heat, emitting deadly SO2, and melting everything in its path.

The closest place I can find to Sodom and Gomorrah chemically is the planet Venus. Due to the Sulfuric compounds producing a greenhouse effect in the atmosphere its ground temperatures can get to around 900*F, enough to melt lead. What probes that were sent there were quickly broken due to the harsh environment but the Russians were able to have a probe last long enough to send back images. And the images look similar to the terrain found around the Dead Sea...

NASA is planing a Davinci space probe mission to study the environment of the planet Venus. It will descend down into a hellish environment with temperatures reaching 900*F. Wondering how long the spacecraft will resist the excessively high temperatures to study the Sodom and Gomorrah like terrain?

The Salt Sea is mentioned several times in scripture, and according to a NET bible footnote, Salt Sea is the older name of the Dead Sea.

See Genesis 14:3; Numbers 34:3, 34:12; Deuteronomy 3:17; and
Joshua 3:16, 12:3, 15:2, 15:5 and 18:19.
