DeFries told Fox Business that he believed the restaurant would take a financial hit:

"We are a family restaurant, and we have been for 13 years. And our customers are from the community. They come in here to relax and enjoy a meal and be entertained, in particular by the NFL on Sundays. But we also serve a lot of local military families and veterans, many of whom share my view on the NFL players' actions during the national anthem.

Before making this decision, I met with the leadership team to ensure we were all aligned on the issue, and we were. We knew that our sales would be negatively impacted."

The impact to his bottom line was felt immediately.

DeFries told Fox News that when he called to get a refund on his DirecTV NFL package, he was told he'd have to eat the $6,000 fee. DirecTV told him it was giving refunds only to residential customers and not business accounts. He said that his restaurant has formally requested a refund.

But then something happened.

DeFries told the Dayton Daily News that people have been coming. In droves:

“Every day our sales have been up between 200 and 300 percent. People we have never seen before are driving hours to support us and the employees. We have received heart-warming and supportive phone calls, emails and direct messages from people all over the United States thanking us.”

Not only are supporters walking into his restaurant and spending money, but they're giving the veteran attaboys on social media:

it is interesting that players being involved in drug use, or animal abuse, or domestic violence, or that playing the game results in many players suffering lasting brain damage was not sufficient for some people to stop watching NFL games. No, it was peaceful protests of racial injustice that caused them to stop watching NFL games.

Your description of these protests shows you do not understand the issue

Nah he pretty much nailed it. Your typical one off condescending posts don't really serve any purpose unless you care to comment like you are actually participating in a conversation.

You have have totally mis-characterized the nature of their protest. Of course , that's easy to do when most of them have no idea what road they are following Kaepernick down. He keeps moving the goalposts as well.

One thing is sure. Most people don't like to be disrespected. Their disrespect touched millions of people in different ways.

...And NFL players are paid a lot of money to take the risks they take, and they know what they are. To me , your comparison is ridiculous.

Altogether, I 'd say it's a dishonest and foolish post.

He listed animal abuse, drug abuse, domestic violence as well as brain damage. Are you saying animal abuse, drug abuse, and domestic violence is a risk of playing the game? Now, I know that you are not. But still, you ignored these other things.

Pure speculation. I stopped watching after Tom Brady hit the same suspension Ray Rice did. A lot of folks did. The NFL has been on decline before Trump got involved.

Yep, I'd say NFL has been in decline for years but most of these problems could have been corrected with proper leadership.

I'll be frank here - everybody always talks about the thug culture and all the drugs and crimes NFL players commit but I've always thought they were rather low given the people involved - all young, fit men in their prime, many black, that have been handed a lot of money at a very young age without any background to handle it. Players are bigger and stronger now, so the injuries will increase.

The NFL is probably on a downward spiral and the protests are accelerating the process. They tapped out their base years ago, why they have been trying to appeal to women (successfully), Mexicans, and the British. Nobody wants their kid to play such a brutal game, I have a friend that played LB in college and he feels it every day of his life, and he is not even forty yet.

Amen.

And to think that my 20 years in the Navy and my husband's 22 years in the Navy made it possible for these ungrateful citizens to do, just what they are doing.

My grandmother had a sign in her kitchen which read "Quityerbellyachin and Praise the Lord for yer blessings."
