Richard Mourdock On Abortion: Pregnancy From Rape Is 'Something God Intended'

A man named Ken recently called in to a Washington, DC radio talk show discussing the question of abortion after rape. In the midst of a politically charged discussion, his personal story caught the host off guard. Ken explained that he was adopted as an infant, and at age 30, located his birth mother and learned the circumstances of his conception.

“Her story was that she was hit over the head with a baseball bat and was raped at 15. So she went away to Catholic Charities, had me, made the brave decision to keep me — and, well, keep me alive. And then I was adopted and I have three beautiful children now, have been married for 15 years – and I would just like to speak up for those [voice breaks] who have no voice.”

Ken defended both women who are the victims of rape, and their innocent children who are conceived in violence:

“It really eats me up when I hear people talk about rape, because it is horrible. My mother won’t tell me who my father’s name is because he threatened to kill her if she ever said anything. So she has not told me his name, but if I was ever to meet him, the first thing I would probably do is punch him. I think rape is horrible, but what I want to say to women out there is: you can take something that was terribly done to you, and make something good out of it. And that’s, [voice breaks] that’s me.”

:applause: Sen Mourdock should encourage Ken to stand for his seat - he puts it so much better.

What Saturneptune said. Republicans seem to make a habit of alienating potential women voters in this campaign.

Matt, you are absolutely correct. Rev's. answer simply proves the point. Either he refuses to see how these comments push women toward the Democrats or he is incapable of understanding how comments affect people .... and women in particular when it involves rape.

It is amazing so many Republican candidates are so lacking in understanding how such comments work against them, and how unnecessary the comments are and should not be made.

When a person is attempting to win votes from society at large they should not make comments that potentially will insult or incense at least 50% of the voters ... if not more.

You have no idea what you are talking about over there across the pond.
On what grounds do you make that rather breathtaking assertion? I comment on what I observe; you don't need to be within the jurisdiction of the USA to be able to do that.

I was giving you the benefit of the doubt since the alternative is selective observation. All kinds of people say stupid things on both sides of the isle. In fact Vice President Joe Biden says dumb things every single week. Obama himself has been caught with dumb statements.

But I suppose you could be another crabby. Liberals will be liberals.

Rev. is trolling again. A reply t hat is totally off topic again. Start a thread on those mistakes.

This fellow still seems to have no idea why his words have raised such irate responses and how he has hurt other candidates. It seems Rev. also does not understand.

Have Obama's lies about the killings in Libya hurt the election chances of all the other Democrats running for office?

(I hope so.)

Nope, just ensuring that people here get to see both sides; we read an awful lot - rightly in most cases - on this board about the stupidities and in some case lies put about by Obama and other Democrats, and it's important to realise that neither party is exempt from half-wittedness and crass, offensive comments.

But, since you mentioned it, here's another 'selective observation'.

"“I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize life is that gift from God,” Mourdock said at a debate. “And I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.”

Somebody point out to me his mistake in that statement.

Still waiting. This doesn't seem insulting, demeaning, or even disrespectful. What is wrong with his statement >?

Because it makes God to be the author of evil. But that is a different topic, so I will start a new thread on that topic.

The topic is how can a person be so blind as not to know that this statement will harm his chances of being elected and also harm others in his party?

Don't you get it, Curtis...

A life that starts as a result of rape is EVIL.

Seriously libs are so deficient in reading comprehension and critical thinking skills it is a wonder that they find their way to the voting booth.

How is it that they manage overcome that particular form of voter suppression?

What Ann said: it can be taken out of context or be taken to mean that the rape is what God intended, rather than the life.

Because it makes God to be the author of evil.

God never allows awful things to happen ? Seems I read in Job that God gives permission to Satan to work his evil.

The way you are trying to change the subject is pretty funny, though.

There is no way to say something like this, and be sure the libbies won't lie about it, twist it, and edit it to show that people who believe life begins at conception are intolerant.

I agree with his statement.

The problem is not what he said. The problem is what everyone is telling us he meant. If we are only to say things that nobody can lie about, twist, or take out of context, then people are going to be mighty quiet.

From the reactions on this thread, I see "the conservatives" are still going to be more concerned about what people might say about them, than doing the work America needs them to do.

Shudder.

Yes, but as a lawyer I am well aware that I am in a walk of life where I have to be very careful with my words. Politics is another such walk of life.

I think that the conservatives ought to be concerned about whether people are going to vote for them so they can do the necessary work in the first place.

Evil people will always twist your words. Satan tries to twist God's words. Take them out of context. Lie about what he meant. Should God have been more careful when he spoke ?

I think Mourdock's being taken out of context here, but at the same time it does illustrate the need for thinking before speaking. It isn't good for the Republican Party to be associated with "legitimate rape" and "God-intended rape".

Precisely; in addition, there's much with which you can get away when you're not just up for election that you can't when you are.
