Rita Could Equal $5 Gasoline

I guess a 10 mile walk to work isn't too bad, I wonder how early I would need to leave to get to the office on time. :(

Let's hope and pray that Hurricane Rita hits far south of the Houston area. It would be better if it hit down in Kenedy County where there are probably more cows than people, but that isn't likely.

Ah yes, the the US gallon is only 3.79l.

Thats the only gallon those folks over there think in. $6.80 a gallon in their terms
.

Thats why I am glad I speak both real English and American ;) .

Still can you imagine the whinging if they had to pay either my $5.25 or your $6.80 a gallon
?

Nope - no one implied stupidity, sorry if you got that. Just two different sized gallons. Matt didn;t know US gallons and most folks over their don't know Impersial gallons.

No stupidity implied intentionally.

Unless you refer to the word "whinging." It simply means complaining.

When I lived in Canada for those few years, and in Japan for that year, the one thing I noticed was the contrast of how people consider public transportation. Being that gas was so expensive in Canada and Japan, most people take the trains, buses, and subways without even a second thought.

Americans, though, are different. There is almost something French about taking public transportation [insert stereotypical french huh-huh-huh-huh laugh right here]. Americans love their cars and consider it practically a civil right to have cheap gasoline.

So leave those trains and buses to those brie-eaters, it is said. I'm an American and I will drive my SUV with cheap gas! And if I don't get cheap gas, then it is somehow Clinton's fault!

Dadgumit!

Its in the Declaration of Independence ..."among these truths are life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, and cheap fuel for gas guzzlers" ;) .

The problem, as I percieve it, is that Americans have little if any alternative. Thise who live there are at the mercy of gas prices. How many of you have a working mass transit system in your area? $5.00 a gallon gas will be much worse for most Americans than it is here, but that can you do about it? You can't walk ten miles to work.

Perhaps its time to start looking for long term solutions.

Long term solutions would be drilling in ANWAR, building more refineries that are not in a "danger zone", investing in alternative fuels, dealing with the .50+ cent per gallon gas tax, etc.

For now car pooling is a good alternative to walking 10 miles to work. It cost me $50 to fill up my gas tank, two tanks of gas a month would cost $100 per month, for someone on a fixed budget that is allot of money!

I think another solution would be to tax heavily gas guzzling autos not used for business purposes (some businesses need larger vehicles).

The taxes would discourage people from buying gas-guzzlers, and the auto companies would have more incentive to produce more fuel efficient autos.
