Robert Reich has the perfect answer to Trumpism

That radical communist movie "It's a Wonderful Life"

It's two radically opposed versions of America. In Potter's social-Darwinist view, people compete with one another for resources. Those who succeed deserve to win because they've outrun everyone else in that competitive race. After the death of George's father, who founded the building-and-loan, Potter moves to dissolve it — claiming George's father "was not a businessman. He was a man of high ideals, so-called, but ideals without common sense can ruin a town." For Potter, common sense is not coddling the "discontented rabble."

In George's view, Bedford Falls is a community whose members help each other. He tells Potter that the so-called "rabble … do most of the working and paying and living and dying in this community." His father helped them build homes on credit so they could afford a decent life. "People were human beings to him," George tells Potter, "but to you, they're cattle."

The movie was also prelude to modern Republican ideology. Since Ronald Reagan, Republicans have used Potter-like social Darwinism to justify everything tax cuts for the wealthy, union-busting, and cutbacks in social safety nets.

Above all, Reagan Republicans, CEOs, and Trumpers have used the strategy of "divide-and-conquer" to generate division among Americans (a kind of political social-Darwinism). That way, Americans stay angry and suspicious of one another, and don't look upward to see where all the money and power have gone. And won't join together to claim it back.

wow.

this is really encouraging. A real uniting post. Reich & his boss created more division in this nation than a lecture hall full of math teachers.

If anyone knows division, it's Robert Reich.

He has it all backward, of course. Potter is the modern Dem/Commie, stealing from people and not caring about the little folk as long as he has power.

George and the other citizens are the modern repubs. They don’t look to the government to solve their problems, they come together and solve it themselves.

Like everything else, liberals destroy whatever they touch and then try to blame others for the failure.

I’m not surprised you think Reich is perfect.

peace to you

It's not meant to be unifying, just truthful.

It's not surprising that Trump and his anti- American fascists are using the same tactics as the Nazis did in Germany. They set fire to the Reichstag and then blamed the communists for doing it. Trump has used a number of the Nazi tactics.

you have some serious perspective issues FTW if you can't/won't see how Reich and Obama divided America ... while the Gipper largely united America.

You really gonna support this notion the nation was more divided in 1990 than in 2014? it's an over simplification to lay it ALL on either president/staff ... but since you are choosing to saddle up with Reich ... then you're one of the horse thieves too.

It is naïve to talk of Trump dividing America. He did no such thing. Obama alienated true Americans by pushing racist policies, LGBTQ policies, and open border policies.

Hillary promised to double down. Biden has tripled down trying to make up for lost time.

The Dem Progressive Left hates America, hates Americans. Trump was the opposite, doing much for the sake of America and Americans.

Those in the grip of the illusions woven by the Dem Progressive Left media are essentially helpless. They have decided not to think for themselves, in part because they are encouraged not to, but even more because it flatters them into believing they are by listening to that mendacious media.

his posts are only meant to incite high levels of emotion. They are not sincere and he doesnt wish to engage in an actual discussion. There is a word for that ……

its best not to feed it

Trump acted contrary to law and the constitution. He wants to be the dictator. He praises other dictators like Putin. You must be blind to not realize that.

even if that were true ... he didn't foster the division in the citizenry Reich claims Trump did. He accused Trump of the very thing his bunch did.
