Ronald Reagan on Appeasement

Is this the same Ronald Reagan who, after 241 marines were killed, appeased the terrorists by tucking tail and running away?

Yes, a very tragic mistake. :tear:

I voted for Reagan in 1980, and I expected a quick, decisive response. I was very disappointed.

Yeah, it took him almost a day to get our hostages home from Iran.

You really should read up on history.

Did this stop the 241 marines from being killed, without retaliation?

Bump

I've noticed when the right-wing idol Ronald Reagan's shortcomings are brought to the forefront, the discussion gets awful quiet.

Now if Obama allowed 241 marines to die without retaliation, this thread would be at least 10 pages long.

Dragonfly, I received the Navy Expeditionary Medal, and I know of several Marines who received them also, for the actions following that bombing. And we had re-commissioned American Battleships pounding Beruit for months, after that bombing.

You don't know what you are talking about.

I'll bite. Not every attack on American interests have resulted in an attack back by the US. Do you know why Reagan did not move? Were there things going on behind the scenes? We do not know.

While you ask a valid question about Reagan you use it to taunt those you have ideological differences with. In the thread about a different type of discussion you taunted conservatives to respond as if you were free and clear and then continue this type of post yourself. If you want to make this type of post that is between you and your God. But to call out those with ideological views different form your own as if you are free and clear and then continue your ridiculous posts is inconsistent to put it nicely.

Now there's a real good joke, you discount all the work Carter put in and give all the credit to Regan.

I sure hope the economy fixes itself on 1/20/2009 so we can say, "it took Obama one day to fix the economy"...

Here's a quote from the N.Y.T., dated 2/9/84. By.....never mind, I found it online....

U.S. BATTLESHIP POUNDS HILLS HELD BY SYRIANS IN LEBANON; BRITAIN; PULLING OUT TROOPS

THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN/The New York Times, February 9, 1984

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Feb. 8 - The United States battleship New Jersey bombarded Druse and Syrian gun batteries in Lebanon for more than nine hours today in the heaviest and most sustained American military action since the marines arrived here 16 months ago.
The gunfire was directed at targets ''in Syrian-controlled Lebanon which have been firing on the city of Beirut,'' a Marine spokesman, Maj. Dennis Brooks, said. The shells fired into the capital had landed in Christian-dominated East Beirut, several miles from the Marine compound at Beirut International Airport.
In Washington, the Pentagon said the destroyer Caron joined in the bombardment, firing more than 300 five-inch shells. It said the New Jersey fired more than 250 16-inch shells.

And I wish yer disbarred felon hero Clinton had "appeased the terrorists by tucking tail and running away" like Reagan and Bush did......maybe if he had avenged the U.S.S. Cole 9/11 never would have happened ? The truth is we did retaliate, heavily.

Brigadier General Joy was overall commander of Lebanon operations for the Marines. 22 November Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger stated that the 23 October suicide attack on the Marines was carried out by Iranians with the "sponsorship, knowledge, and authority of the Syrian government." 4 December Marines at Beirut International Airport came under heavy fire from gun positions in Syrian-held territory. Marine casualties: eight killed, two wounded. Naval gunfire missions fired in retaliation. Earlier in the day, a 29-plane raid was conducted on Syrian antiaircraft positions in the mountains east of Beirut, in retaliation for Syrian fire directed at American aerial reconnaissance missions. Two U.S. aircraft are downed, in this first combat mission over Lebanon. 15 December The battleship USS New Jersey delivered 16-inch gunfire on antiaircraft positions in the Syrian-occupied mountains southeast of Beirut, as the Syrians continue to fire at U.S. reconnaissance flights over the area. This was the USS New Jersey's first action off Lebanon. 28 December The Long Commission released an unclassified 140-page report on the 23 October suicide attack. 1984 8 January A Marine is killed by unidentified assailants as he exits a helicopter at a landing zone on the edge of downtown Beirut. The helicopter flew to safety, after returning fire with its machine guns. 13 January Marines in the Beirut International Airport area fought a 30-minute battle with gunmen firing from a building east of their perimeter. 15 January Druze gunners closed Beirut International Airport for three hours with intense 23mm fire on Marine positions east and southeast of the airport. U.S. forces responded with small arms fire, mortars, rockets, tank fire, and naval gunfire from the battleship USS New Jersey and destroyer USS Tattnall. No U.S. casualties. --152--
2 February Heavy fighting erupted in the suburbs of Beirut, between the Lebanese Army and Shiite militiamen. 3 February Shiite leadership called for resignation of Moslem cabinet members and urges Moslems in the Lebanese Army to disregard the orders of their leaders. Prime Minister Wazzan and the Lebanese cabinet resigned, to clear way for formation of new coalition government. 6 February Druze and Moslem militiamen seized much of Beirut in street fighting and demanded resignation of Gemayel. 7 February President Reagan announced decision to redeploy Marines from Beirut International Airport to ships offshore, leaving a residual force behind to protect the U.S. Embassy and other American interests. Increased reliance on air strikes and naval gunfire support indicated. 8 February USS New Jersey bombarded Druze and Syrian gun positions as part of the heaviest naval gunfire support since the arrival of the Marines in 1982. 10-11 February American civilians and other foreign nationals were evacuated from Beirut by helicopter. 21 February Marines began their redeployment to ships of the Sixth Fleet offshore. About 150 Marines departed in the first increment. 26 February Redeployment of the 22d MAU to offshore ships completed....
