You don't even know what this war is about.
Let me take a shot at “what this war is about”.
Ronald Reagan led the US in an unsustainable effort to outspend the USSR that directly led to the economic collapse of the Soviet Union. Under new and more enlightened leadership, Russia skillfully navigated the transition to a new Russia that was an international partner with the west … profitably participating in the ISS and becoming a significant trading partner with the new EU. The former “Eastern European” countries that were held as “buffer states” under the control of the former USSR became independent. Old problems exploded out of control (like the former Yugoslavia). Great opportunities were realized (like German reunification). Nations formerly controlled by puppet governments for the benefit of the greater “Soviet Union” were forced to relearn the art of self-government (like Poland and Ukraine).
With the government of the “international” Russia replaced by an “old school” USSR philosophical leadership, these independent nations with a living memory of Soviet Occupation were being forced to make hard choices about what to do next. While most would have probably preferred to maintain independent autonomy and a free hand to negotiate with the giant economies of both Russia and the EU, the reality that Russia was annexing land could not be ignored.
Almost without exception, all of the independent nations chose to either join the EU or join NATO as their only hope of surviving the renewed Russian territorial aggression.
I will grant you that NATO sharing a border with Russia is a terrible idea, however it is not Germany invading countries and annexing territory that brought NATO to the Russian border … it is Russia that has been reclaiming former USSR territory and forcing its neighbors to join NATO to survive.
I would prefer a Russia that withdrew from all its illegal territorial gains and a NATO that withdrew to Germany and a wide band of independent nations playing “The Mouse that Roared” between Russia and the EU. Putin’s Russia made my desires impossible.
So that is my “uninformed” opinion.
The official response from Moscow is … (your turn).
