Someone mentioned Safari being good for power users, maybe it was you Dale. Anyway, what do you mean by that? Just curious.

A basic browser is fine for anyone but for serious browsing, a good browser is needed.
This is what set Firefox apart from IE in many ways.
The simple back forward stop and refresh are fine for basic users and novices.

Many features of Safari are now in other browsers but the features I really like about Safari that make it more of a "power user" browser are as follows:

Tabbed browsing, of course they all have this now.

Google search bar, also, everyone has this now.

Bounceback - I don't think anyone has this, It is a button to go back to a home page or to your Google search results after you have gone forward many pages. A very useful feature.

Spell check for web forms which in very useful for forums like this, I use it all the time, like when I just misspelled "forums) earlier in this sentence. Firefox 2 now has this feature as well.

A very elegant and powerful bookmark system with drag and drop with folders. In the bookmarks bar you can have folders of bookmarks that are turned into drop down menus so you can have fast access to multiples sites by category. FOr instance I have all of my forums in a single folder.

A very useful find on page feature. Most browsers have this but the latest Safari is by far the best I have used, even a lot better that previous Safari versions.

Private Browsing. Today I was on another Mac at work and I needed to check my private email. Forget about History because I simply enabled private browsing and it didn't save and history or cash, cookies or anything.

A good download manager with pause, stop, resume and reload features.

Anyway, the UI is so clean that many think that is is just a scaled down, almost dumbed down browser but it actually is the most feature rich browser I have used for the types of browsing that I do.

    A VERY good Popup blocker.

Support for core services such as text to speech.

Built in PDF printing for anypage and a preset for web receipts, though that works with any Mac browser.

A very clean and efficient UI, even though it has powerful features, it does not get in the way of novice users.

I didn't read through the thread-I'm a mac user and I like safari. I used FF when I had a PC.

Only wish safari had a better cookie manager-can't see how they missed it.

ok Jim -- in what ways is their cookie manager lacking. I still haven't downloaded it. Painting took priority over developing last week :type:

As simple as this. In FF or Camino (maybe IE, it's been too long) you can mark cookies to be saved so you don't have to sort through the entire collection to see which ones ya wanna save.

I had a program called CCleaner where I could park cookies I wanted to save and just flush the rest.

Nothing like that for Safari-might be a plug in for it somewhere but I've had no success finding it.

And yet even with that it's my preferred browser (though I downloaded Camino last night after reading this thread and I'm going to check it out).

Hey Dale, thanks for the reply. I'm still fooling with Safari, but it is still not my browser of choice. I know the bookmarks in IE are still lacking in their adaptability, and bounceback, is that just like the home page?

    No, bounceback is dynamic.
Let's say you have searched for something in Googel then you see a link in the results page.
You click that and then click another link within that page and another and so on. You may be 6 or 7 pages removed from your search results and want to go back. you just click on thr orange bounceback button and there you are.
it does work in theaddess bar too, perhaps more useful there.

I downloaded Safari and have played with it a little. So far it is just another browser. Firefox is my browser of choice right now, and other than bounceback I don't see any features in Safari that Firefox is missing. Knowing the Firefox community I doubt it wll be long before an extension for bounceback becomes available.

I've been having a few problems since I installed, Safari, until now I did not put the time frames together...

Maybe I will uninstall the poisonous Apple and see what happens. :)

It is still in beta so problems are to be expected.
Weird but I had no problems.

I will say though that I didn't have much installed on those machine.
Could be that you all installing them on your primary machines are having conflicts with other programs.

My advice, use Firefox until the final release and then check it out, unless you are doing web development and need to know if it looks good.

Well, web developing isn't being helped when I can't keep my laptop up and running ;)

I'm taking it off in the interim. You guys please keep us posted. I was hopeful for the development reasons!

    That is for sure.
it should be ready in a few months. I have been using the beta and really like it.
Of course I have mostly just used the Mac version which does not have all the bugs the windows version seems to have.

BTW, Bisty, how much RAM does your PC have?

Firefox is tough to beat. IMO, Firefox and Safari are like a Buick and Cadillac.

I have 1.25 GB of RAM

I also installed PC doctor when school got out and I'm not sure that it running in the background wasn't clogging up the works too. I shut it down today and things have been more back to normal. After I figure out how to get my money back, I'll take it off and try Safari again.

I want a browser equivalent to my german made car! That will make me happy. :applause:

Firefox is a Cadilac and Safari is a Mercedes :)
Both are nice but Safari just has that extra amount of elegance.
As soon as the technical problem are gone, you will find it a great browser. BTW, you may note that there is an updated version already. Make sure you have the latest version.

I know it CAN run well on both XP and vista as I have tried it.
BUt since I have littlle installed, there is probably a conflict I don't have that others do.

Oooookaaayyy. If it really is, I'll give it another try.

I'm waiting to hear from my "I want my money back" email on the other.

I do have a lot on mine. I have several graphics programs to make banners and manipulate art. I have programs to build math problems for school. They take a lot of juice because essentially they are graphics too.

Your computer sounds like it should be fine.

If you are doing lot's of graphics, have you ever considered a Mac?

The funny thing is that I have only tried Safari for windows on Apple hardware running XP in a virtual machine and Vista in a dual boot configuration :)
