So, which is it?

Is it "of the LORD," or is it "of the Jews?

IMHO, I tend to believe it's "of the LORD rather than "of the Jews," but since Jesus Himself told the Samaritan woman at the well that "salvation is "of the Jews," He can't be wrong since He is the very embodiment of Truth (John 14:6).

Please help me to understand which one of these statements is correct.

They're both correct.

But it won't make any sense if salvation is defined as
"saved from hell, going to heaven"

So before any discussion about who or where it comes from, can you give a reader's digest version of what you believe salvation is?

CONTEXT!

Salvation is from God ("the LORD").

In the passage recounting the discussion Jesus had with the woman at the well, He is responding to a diversionary question she posed which was a major source of disagreement between the Jewish people and the Samaritans, namely, where is the physical location where people must worship God (see verse 20)? Jesus gives her the bigger truth - the truth that she did not ask because she did not know enough to ask it - that the location of worship is much less important that worshipping God in spirit and truth (v.21).

Now, He went on to directly answer the question that she posed - the proper (according to the ceremonial Law) location of worship is in Jerusalem since God has been bringing salvation to the entire world primarily through the Jewish people.

God is bringing salvation to all who will receive it. It has been brought to all through God's work in the people group known as "the Jews," culminating in Jesus.

It is not an either/or proposition.

I guess the "you" means WPE3BQL.

First off, "salvation" (esp. in the OT) doesn't always mean "being 'saved' in the 'spiritual sense." It sometimes just means being delivered from physical harm as in the case of Jonah.

In Jonah Chapter 2, he relates how God "saved" him from being killed by "the great fish."

Jonah was "saved" in the spiritual sense sometime before he wrote the book that goes by his name.

We used "saved" in the physical sense today when, e.g., we might say that "The lifeguard at the pool 'saved me' from drowning." He/she didn't "save" me in the same sense that Jesus Christ "saves" a person who puts his/her trust in Him.

That being said, my Reader's Digest version of what I believe "salvation" is would be something like this:

In WPE3BQL's case, I received "salvation" when I trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ to "deliver" me out of Satan's family and adopted me into God's family on April 23, 1966. I acknowledged the fact that I was a sinner who was totally incapable of "saving" myself, and that placing my trust in what Jesus did on my behalf was the only way I could ever expect to secure eternal life. IOW, Christ "saved" me from the penalty of sin [Which I deserved.], at that very moment I trusted Him as my Savior; He presently is "saving" me from the power of sin; and one day He'll "save" me from the presence of sin when either I physically die or (if I'm still physically alive) when He returns to earth.

Is that a clear enough Reader's Digest version for you JamesL? :thumbs:

Clear enough, thanks. I like that you're able to see a little deeper, as in your lifeguard scenario.

But as it relates to Israel, your Reader's Digest version is lacking an element. Salvation, in the mind of the Jew, was a possession given as an inheritance by God. Read Genesis 15:1-4 and see what God promised to Abraham on the day he was justified. God said "Great is your reward"

Hebrews 1:14 speaks clearly of those who will "inherit" salvation. Paul speaks of the reward of the inheritance in Colossians 3:23-24

This is the salvation which is of the Jews. Paul preached this gospel to the Jew first, then the Greek -Romans 1:16

Salvation is that which comes to those who have a true heart for God. Such a heart finds a godly sorrow (2 Corinthians 7:10) which leads to a repentance (sorrow for being a sinner against God) both of which lead to a true heart for and toward God.

Since we then have salvation we escape the wrath of God (Romans 1:18; Romans 5:9) and are promised the glory of God (John 17:22) and the rewards of heaven (2 Timothy 4:8; 1 Corinthians 9:25) and the promise of dwelling with God for eternity (Revelation 21:3).
