Saved by Baptism?

I was invited to a "Reformation Day" event at a WELS Lutheran Church today so I went. They had a Seminary Professor from Wisconsin giving a Power Point on Luther...kinda interesting till he made this statement, " We are saved by Baptism" Now I woke up when I heard that but nobody else seemed to notice or become agitated. Wow, could any church today avowing Christianity today really believe......very insightful commentary ....no wonder as a RC I was always confused. We are saved by grace, we are saved by faith....but baptism?

Did Peter not say in Acts, "Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38).

So how was baptism understood by the early church? I know Tertullian had allot to say about it because he lists 4 purposes that baptism serves

1. The forgiveness of sin
2. deliverance from death
3. regeneration
4. The gift of the holy Spirit.

Then could the professor tonight be hinting at something that Lutherans follow that we Baptists ignore?

Baptismal regeneration is a false doctrine -- or, I should edit that to say I believe it is a false doctrine. Considering how often I have been called apostate, cultic, heretic, and blasphemer here, it has made me more humble about declaring something false.

Luke 12:50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!

Exactly what is the baptism spoken of in the verse above? If the above spoken of baptism had not taken place would salvation have ever come for man?

Prior to the above baptism, did anything ever take place in the life of Jesus that pictured the above baptism?

If the answer was yes, how did it picture the baptism of Luke 12:50?

Will Christians also be baptized with the baptism Jesus was speaking of in Luke 12:50?

Just like our Lord Jesus is there something we should do that pictures our being baptized with the baptism Jesus was baptized with spoken of in Luke 12:50?

If the answer is yes do we then receive something that should give us confidence that the future baptism of Luke 12:50 will take place in us?

I have no idea what they meant but Im startin to get creaped out by them. too bad there is know Lutherans on here to interpret. Dont they have any "born again" experience. Heaven help them if its all sacramental.

they would that God does cleansing for original Sin and makes us reborn in the water, but that is due to God doing it thru faith that he gives in thre sacrament to receive it!

RCC sees the Sacramental grace inherit in the water baptism, while they see it as God working by faith in the sacrament!

RCC dunks a baby, and the water has grace in it to cleanse and save baby, They see God granting baby faith to receive Christ!
