Southern Seminary trustees accept gift of Wisconsin university campus

“The fact that there will be a Boyce College and Southern Seminary campus located in Wisconsin on a campus of this stature is an enormous step forward for Southern Baptists,” said Southern Seminary President R. Albert Mohler Jr. “I can only imagine what the founders of the Southern Baptist Convention would think to know that the reach of the SBC and its mother seminary is now of this magnitude in the upper Midwest.” Daniel Patz, president of Northland since 2013, attended the meeting and told trustees, “This is a gift from Northland to The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary."

"Southern Seminary trustees previously approved a strategic partnership with Northland, during which the administration evaluated the school’s potential as a future campus. Northland trustees have approved the gifting of its campus and school."

So was Northland struggling financially and enrollment down? Is that why they just gave away their campus as a "gift"?

I'm not complaining. But this sounds like a sugar coated turd. Everything on the outside is sweet, but when you dig deeper, you end up with a load of crap.

Yes and yes. They essentially ditched their IFB origins and alumni and supporters and declared themselves a bridge between fundamentalists and evangelicals. But you can't cast away your alumni and supporters and expect to succeed as a college, so they have been bleeding green and losing students to schools like Maranatha Baptist U., right here in the same state.

It's a very nice campus with a youth camp right there, deer and bears wandering around in the vicinity. Problem: it's way up in N. WI, not close to any sizeable towns, so students have always struggled finding jobs there.

P. S. Northland has never been Calvinist--till now I suppose. :type:

It's a very nice campus with a youth camp right there, deer and bears wandering around in the vicinity. Problem: it's way up in N. WI, not close to any sizeable towns, so students have always struggled finding jobs there.

That is what is happening to my alma mater... same exact thing... down to the name. Piedmont Baptist College to Piedmont International University. I'm not complaining b/c I'm not a fundie. But my school is on its way out I suspect. I give it 10 years.

I pastored in northern Wisconsin in the 70's when Northland began. It never was a great "academic" school, but did have "heart".

Some years ago it lost its "base of support" (ifb churches and parents who sent kids there). As it was hemorrhaging financially, it changed to an "inclusive" position - open to non-Baptist, loose evangelicals, modern music, etc. "Exclusive" fundamentalists quit supporting it - Maranatha Baptist University in southern Wisconsin is a large, growing IFB school that still attracts fundamentalist support.

The more new-evangelicals also already had "good" schools (Northwestern in Minneapolis for example) and as mentioned earlier, who would want to go to a bible camp campus in the middle of nowhere? Faculty and students jumped ship.

Rather than to the way of Pillsbury Baptist College (where I taught in the 90's) which made similar moves and dwindled resources and support until they finally closed and sold a great campus to non-Christians) this move was a way to keep Northland "open" and vision of its founder - who would be rolling in his grave - alive.

With only a handful of SBC churches in the entire MN/WI area, there will be no groundswell of support or influx of students. But will wait to see what happens.

LOTS of outcry from my crowd - fundamental Baptists who are NOT SBC and NOT liking the whole tenor of that group and who have poured $$$ and students to Northland for 40+ years and now feel BETRAYED.

Sorry to hear that. I had heard some things about Piedmont and their problems. Saw Barkev Trachian of the seminary at a conference on our last furlough and he was positive about things. And an old friend from our mission board recently retired from the field to teach like I did this year, and teaches missiology thee. So I hope the school recovers and lives down its troubles.

Hello all:

"I don't have a dog in the old fight," i.e., fundamentalism. But "I do have a dog in the new fight" (if indeed there is one here?).

I am an alum of "The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary" since Dr. Al Mohler has been president (M.Div. 1995).

And I was wondering; is it the Doctrines of (soteriological) Grace that will upset the alumni and independent fundamentalists baptists. Or, (and it is a big "or" from my perspective), is it that SBTS is not a fundamentalists school?

Would separation issues / methods trump the heart of the Gospel? Just asking! Not trying to start a ruckus. But is seems from my perspective that the "old fundamentalists" hate the doctrines of grace. Whereas, the "young restless and reformed" fundamentalist have "kinda" "sorta" been drawn to them. Need some clarification here please if you will?!

Please be kind as someone who is not from the fundamentalist's fold. LOL!

Hi, Rhet.

I think the primary objection from Fundamentalists would be that SBTS is not Fundamentalist. Most wouldn't know its theological orientation; those who did would wonder at the Northland decision, since Northland was not Calvinistic. But after all, we do have our own Calvinistic Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary which prospers, though many Fundamentalists would not send students there.

Having said that, the feeling among Fundamentalists would be that SBTS getting the Northland campus is simply the final step in a process that began when the pres. aimed the school in a conservative evangelical direction, thus abandoning its Fundamentalist roots, alumni and supporting pastors. This among other things is seen as a betrayal. The latest step is not among those I've talked to.

Bad move by SBTS!! Bad move in that they do not have the $$$ to support that type of loss over several years.

By George (whoever he was), friend Marooncat79 is plugged in. Note the announcement today on the Northland website:http://www.ni.edu/news-events/important-announcement/

On the SBTS website, the link was broken to the "Northland Leadership Summit," but then when I looked again even the announcement was gone. However, I can find no announcement about Northland on the website.
