A middle school principal is withholding the results of a recent student body election because they ‘weren’t diverse enough.’

Principal Lena Van Haren of Everett Middle School in San Francisco, Calif., said the candidates who were elected ‘weren’t representative’ of the ‘diverse student body.’

“That is concerning to me because as principal I want to make sure all voices are heard from all backgrounds,” she said in a letter to parents.

Van Haren also said she was calling a meeting with the student candidates and officials on Wednesday to decide how to make the election results ‘more diverse.’

The letter, of course, sparked outrage from parents.

What? This is not setting our children up for the reality of the country, and that is what those elections are for anyway, right? They wouldn't do this in American Government, so what makes him think this is okay for him to do to these students? I'm outraged by this, and it's not even my kids. It is a little close to home for me though because I'm from across the Bay in Oakland, and I'm just trying to think what would have happened if that would have come up s an issue while I was in school? It would not be pretty.

Well if the election was held fairly and the votes were counted and a winner was clear, I don't see how the result can be altered or disregarded.

It might not have been what the school principle wanted, but in an election it's the people that decide, that's the whole point of having the election in the first place I would have thought?

So what's the plan now? Is she going to just pick who she wants instead? That would be a fairer result how?

Don't be surprised to see this expand. I just voted in an election for an education organisation where you had to vote for male and female candidates because women are guaranteed half the seats. Several county councils and one political party do the same. The problem is they are still having a hard time getting enough women to run, so in some cases any woman who runs is going to be elected to insure there is a gender balance.

Of course since Ireland just passed a 'Gender Recognition Law' I guess a man could say he was a woman and run for a woman's seat?

Concerns raised over lack of diversity in SF school election results

SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - There’s a bit of controversy surrounding student elections at a San Francisco middle school after the results were immediately withheld by the principal because they weren’t diverse enough.

The incident happened at Everett Middle School in San Francisco’s Mission District. The voting was held Oct. 10, but the principal sent an email to parents on Oct. 14 saying the results would not be released because the candidates that were elected as a whole do not represents the diversity that exists at the school.

The email went on to say they were thinking of ways to value the students who won, while increasing the diversity of the group.
Parent Bianca Gutierrez said the experience has made her son, a 7th grader, rethink his run for class representative. She said he is discouraged and does not want to be a part of the process anymore.

“That should have been something [discussed] prior to elections and prior to the campaigning process,” Gutierrez said.

According to Principal Lena Van Haren, Everett Middle School has a diverse student body. She said 80 percent of students are students of color and 20 percent are white, but the election results did not represent the entire study body.

“That is concerning to me because as principal I want to make sure all voices are heard from all backgrounds,” Van Haren said.

Van Haren said her vision for students for them to not only be academically successful, but to be agents of change. She called a meeting with all the student candidates and administration on Wednesday to talk about the best way to move forward.

“We’re not nullifying the election, we’re not cancelling the election and we’re not saying this didn’t count,” Van Haren said.

This reminds me of my high school. We were a majority white population school. But we would always have at least two black cheerleaders on the squad. Never 3. Never 1. But always 2. We also had 16 White Senior Favorites and 16 Black Senior Favorites. 8 white girl Senior Favorites were always paired with 8 white male Senior Favorites in their spreads. And 8 black girl Senior Favorites were always paired with 8 black male Senior Favorites in their spreads.

I thought it was simply crazy, but had seen it done that way in every previous yearbook and it was done the same way at other schools in the county.

Crazy.

I think I can understand where she's coming from and I think she just had good intentions. She doesn't want anyone to be discriminated against or she wants to be seen as caring for all races. That's good if that was her intention. But she can't really alter the votes. Especially because she got such outrage from the parents. I wonder what she'll do about it. Sticky situation.

I guess as long as she doesn't remove any of the kids who actually WERE elected, it should be okay to just add extra reps. Still seems kinda weird.

As I read the Chron article, she's not seeting aside the election results. She's delaying their release to find out why they were as they were. Though, I (as a native of the area) would hazard "minorities" she expected to be involved weren't because they had other priorities. I think one story said the school is 80% minorities( Hispanic and Black) and 20% White. So I'm assuming she wants to make sure the white students are "represented". I was Student Government President waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay,waaaaaaaay back a long time ago. And we never made any real decisions that were life or death somebody needed us there to represent them. And I really can't see that being the case with a middle school either.

She seems to think they do. I guarantee that a majority of the kids don't care who their reps are nearly as much as she does.

This is ridiculous. By making it about minorities, they are creating racism in itself. They are making race an issue. I don't think the fact that there are less minorities being elected has anything to do with their background. I think it has to do with how they present themselves in elections.

Above is the graphic for the school makeup and 85% of the students are minorities. So she noticed no Blacks or Hispanics for the top four positions. Were there any Blacks or Hispanics running for those positions? And if so, maybe she should try asking the students why they voted for the white candidates over the minority candidates?

But something else seems to be "off" about this school and this story. I can't quite put my finger on it yet.
